Title: Handgun Ammo legalities
Post by: FinsnFur on April 06, 2011, 10:15:10 PM
I thought by law, cashiers selling handgun ammo had to write down or document the purchasers name drivers license etc , and retain the info for x amount of days or hours.

I picked up some 9mm this afternoon from a local gun shop and they had a new gal working. She never asked me for nothing but 14 bucks.

It may be different in other states, but in KY they don't ask anything anymore as long as you are over 18 for rifle ammo and 21 for handgun ammo.   At one time, you did have to write down your name and a bunch of other crap.   The record keeping was horrific for the sellers.   I'm not sure when that was done away with but it had to be several years ago.

I think it's pretty much the same way here too Semp. Every once in a great while I might get asked for my DL when I buy ammo, but not much.
I mostly use a couple gun shops that I do business with so I never really get asked for anything unless I buy a gun and then the background check kicks into effect, but everyone has to do that.

Hey Jim,

Before today, when was the last time you bought handgun ammo? I think what Semp is talking about was federal law and went out in the seventies. California passed a handgun ammo registration law in 2009, but a judge struck it down before it went into effect. Of course I don't know the law in every state, and Wisconsin could have had such a thing more recently.

Maybe they let it go here too then and I wasnt aware of it. I've bought three new rifles from this place over the last few years, and they know me, but this lil hotty was new and never asked a question. I thought it was odd.

Actually I normally buy ammo for the 9 at Wally World, maybe thats why?

No questions asked here either, unless there is some question if you are over 21. Maybe you just look old? :laugh2: :laugh2:

I think she's sweet on ya Jim.  :laf: :laf:

I haven't been carded for ammo here in Ohio for decades myself. Illinois requires a picture ID,, ammo card,, to buy it I believe.

Now I'll have to check here in N.Y.  and see if Wal-Mart is still asking. The last time I bought 9mm ammo at wal-mart quirea few years ago they asked if it was for a handgun. I said no it was for a rifle and no paper work. I usually only buy .22  ammo there as I load my own centerfire but once in awhile I need some extra brass.

only thing I have ever had to do to buy ammo was show my drivers license to prove I was over 18.  we used to have to wait three days when purchasing a pistol as well but that was done away with when we had to take a nics test when purchasing a firearm.

Jim, maybe she just wanted to get the "dirty 'ol man" outa there as quickly as possible. It's happend to me before.  :alscalls:

Wally World asks that because you are suppose to be 21 to buy handgun ammo I think. I dono, it might be their policy.
