I went out today to call a bird in for another fella and I called in two hens and a Jake. They fed in front of me about 50 yds behind the shooter for a good while...........I had that Jake all worked up and he came to 15 yds of me 2 or 3 times.
They then went over the hill a little and GOBBLE.....GOBBLE Two more comming and they were all out of site of my shooter!
That damn Jake came back and got scared of something @ 25yds and they all started alarming sooooooooo BANG I shot the only bird I could, the Jake YUMMY  5" beard and 1/2" spurrs nice for a Jake.
All the time my shooter knew they were there but could not see anything until they started to fly
He said to me I do not know how you sit still for that :nono:
For a slow start, I have had a great season and filled all of my tags.
OHHHH! and we had some coyote pups come in raisin cain before light! Wow that was nuts! We did not get to see any though, just heard them.

Way to go Al!  :yoyo:

My season has been a bust. Nothing at all happened on youth day. Of course the first day was miserable wet, but they were gobbling', just on the neighbors though. Didn't get to go again till this past tuesday. No gobblin' goin on whatsoever. I tried to entice one with some yelps to no avail, so I decided to just sit down and see what happens. Before I could get set up, I noticed two longbeards at about a hunderd yards closing in real fast and my gun was leaning against a tree.  :madd: When they hit a low spot, I was able to pick it up and wait, but I was in the wide open. When they got within about 35-40 yards, they noticed me so I leveled the shotgun, had trouble finding the sights but was able to squeeze one off. He rolled so I started toward him. When I got about half way there, he was up and running then hit the air. I blew it.

Today I just got wet, no gobbles at all. I did whack a groundhog with the .22 pistol when I got home though.  :eyebrow:
Be careful.......A lot of guys I call for says those birds are too far and I just smile and call em right in. Two things can happen, The birds are closer than it seems........a hill blocking the sound ect.
Or birds can and sometimes will give in and fly your way....They usually fly up in a tree and look for that hen though, thats where moving a decoy comes in handy with some fishing line  It can be a lot of work but man I am telling you Never say they wont come. I called that Jake this mourning out of a guys garden at the bottom of a 300 yd long hill, through some rough woods. How do I know? His crawl was full of parsley and that guy is growing it. I checked :eyebrownod: I could barley hear them birds gobble today until they broke over the edge where I could see them. You probably already know this stuff but give them neighbor birds a yell for a couple hours and when they shut up wait till they gobble again later in the day and hit em again they will come....not always but they will sometimes.

Someday we've gotta meet up and shoot the bull over a camp fire.  I bet we could share some good stories.

Yall have speedie marinade down south ?   If not I'll send ya a bottle to try out.. seriously.  Just north of where I live in NY state made it famous.  Or you can make your own without a problem.   If I'm not to energetic I buy the State Fare Original to use, I dont like the chicken stuff they put out.

When are we going Al???

I have shot two jakes in the past. The first one I didn't know was a jake because of the angle, just got a glimpse of the beard when he turned, so I shot. The second was late in the season and I was getting skunked, soooo. I could see no difference in the taste.

I know what you mean Al, by calling them in from the neighbors, done that in the past. Right now we have little league every saturday, and I only take half days  vac. to get more hunting in while burning less of my vacation, so I have to knock off early to get to work by 10:30. I know I just need to bite the bullet and take some whole days and do it right.

That sure is a nice bird Trenton shot!! Congrats to him on that one.  :congrats: :congrats:

The 24th huh??  :wo:  Our season winds up on the 18th & it is less than 2 hours to Jim's house. So if I were to have that day off I could leave here around 3:30AM & make real good time in your direction. Of course this is all subject to the Wifes approval you know.  :eyebrownod:

Actually it wouldn't be this year tho. I would rather show up when I could use at least 2 days of the 6 day tag!!  :laf:
