Got out yesterday for some crows finally. It was a beautiful Fall day with 36* temps. I took the ol 870 20ga out for the maiden voyage of the new season & after several "Welcome back" shots with it I finally managed to get into a bit of a groove. Not too many pics since I was out more for the enjoyment of being away from work & town.

The days take. 7 "good" crows volunteered to make web history on this date.

Looks like you had a good day Glen! :congrats:

Although we have crows out here and a season I don't hunt them as we also have ravens which are protected, go figure.  They are hard to distinguish while in flight so I don't bother.  I once asked the local warden how in the heck do you determine which is which, his reply:  "If you miss it was a raven, if you kill it, it is a crow."

Seven crows not a bad day at all, better than zero pigeons.
When they come for mine they better bring theirs

Looks like Glen had fun is right. But I'm not real sure I'm buying this whole "Not too many pics since I was out more for the enjoyment of being away from work & town."...speel. :laf:

Very nice Glen. Thanks for the pics PIC

:alscalls: :alscalls: @ the crow pot pie!!

Yes I did Dave!! I had a blast!!

I agree with the Warden Mr. John. Altho that might not be the same Warden that shows up.  :innocentwhistle: :innocentwhistle:  The only way I could tell the difference is that they sound different from the crows. And I'm happy with the 7 for my 1st hunt. I'm not a good wingshooter so it takes me a cople months wo get back in the groove. Hope you get to busting them damned pigeons soon too!!  :yoyo: :yoyo:

One or maybe 2 of those fell to a Hawks Feather CC as well!! Now that's having fun right there!!!!  :yoyo: :yoyo:

:laf: :laf: @ Jim!! What a morning!! Cool & brisk with a light breeze & crows responding!! I'll take more pics next time for you.

Went out again this morning. 29* & breezy. I knew this wouldn't last long & it didn't. I was setup & ready by 7:20. Heard the 1st Crow just before 8:00. At 8:00 I had the 1st one on the ground. By 9:00 I had 8 more with it. 9 by 9:00 was a good start to the day. But again,, I knew things wouldn't last the way they were. By 9:30 things had changed. The winds were really whipping thru off & on. By 10:00 I had 2 more on the ground & a cripple that landed in the woods about 60 yards or so to my left. Never found it. By 10:30 I had 3 more in the dirt & one in the heavy brush that I could see but couldn't get to for the picture. But it sure was dead!! By then I'd had enough.

Short 2 second clip of the winds. My phone wouldn't work right & this was all I could get with it. I actually shot the last 6 in these winds. I missed a lot of easy shots but I don't think it was all me this time as I was hitting decent up til then.

The pile for the day (14) minus the one in the brush for 15 total "good" Crows.

The carnage shot. Not a very good one & coulda had more birds in it but I'll take the 15 for the 3 hours I could stand to be out getting buffeted about in the tree line.

Those winds you speak of were here all morning.  It seems to have calmed down a little, but this morning was nasty.  I am glad that you were able to get out and have some more fun.

I assume that you didn't need to shoot the two that came down from the HF call.  I can usually just blow one and they die right there from the awful sound.

Nice job...there's enough there for TWO pies now

Naw, you need '4 and 20' blackbirds to make a pie.

Thanks Pat!! You did a darn good job on those Turkeys down there too!!  :yoyo: :yoyo:

Jerry-- The hand calls didn't seem to work yesterday for whatever reason. So I put them away & just used the e-caller.  There's been quite a few crows die by the HF~~ Hawks Feather~~ & not to be confused with Harbor Freight tools,,  around these parts over the last couple years.  :eyebrow: :eyebrow:  And those winds were horrible!! I had to lead them on 15yd shots!!  :whew:

I'll get that pie sent North Jim!! Just watch for the little brown truck!!  :eyebrow: :eyebrow:

Thanks Jim!! Gonna have to wait ti the corn is picked now tho. The Wheat is coming thru on the bean fields.

Get out there & film some Black Death for us Richard!!  :yoyo: :yoyo:

Things started slow again this AM. 1st crow didn't show til just after 7AM. Shot & missed!!  Things got a little better after that tho. I managed to train 11 "good" crows. 10 of which made it into the final pic. I wasn't wading the river for ol #11 tho.

I realized today I hadn't gotten any pics from the blind so here's one.

Remnants from the last volley of the day. 4 "good' crows stayed behind for the photo op. The other 15 or 20 left in a hurry.

Carnage shot. There are a couple dekes in the pic.

Total tally for the day.

Just walked back in the door!! I went yesterday AM early to look for crows. I found about 100 or so. They were evenly divided between 2 fields about 8 miles apart. Last night on the way home from the store we seen probably 250 crows flying in the general direction of one of those 2 fields to roost. So I decided to setup on the closest field 1st today. Just hoping some would fly South to my location.

Well it didn't quite happen that way but the other 50 or so from yesterday did show up to the same area. I was able to call them from my location & really enjoyed the shooting. I used the CZ712 this AM. The sky rained black feathers for hours!! Well maybe not that much BUT,,,,, 17 crows became a little more mild mannered than when they came in!!

There is 16 in the pile. Ol #17,,, which was actually the 13th crow of the day,,, ended up downstream somewhere. Seems they don't swim all that well when they're full of holes!!

This is my Field of Dreams shot.

You can see the "floater" about 1/3 of the way down the pic. Along the hanging branch on the left.

Sure was a good morning hunt. I had a lot of fun.

Glen,

What is that brown stuff the crows are laying on?  Not only that, but I think this shot was set up.  There is NO way that there isn't ice on the water.    I guess spring will come sooner in your area than ours.

Jerry

P.S.  Looks like a fun shoot.
