Got a new place, and the rains have been extremely good this year in Texas. Decided to throw out a camera this weekend to see what's out there. Captured this old boy on camera on the 4th.

As for the rain, I am glad that you are getting it. I remember a couple of years ago that you posted pictures of dried up river beds.

I'm loving the drop on the buck! I should mention that this place is low-fence (cattle 4-strand barb-wire) free range with no supplemental feeding.
A couple days ago when I went out to set up the trail camera's , I was walking along the barb-wire fence that separates this pasture from a thick wooded and brushy area when I spied something on the other side of the fence. I got closer and the critter turned around to face me.... a frickin' BADGER less than 15 feet away.
I ran like hell and it chased me for a few yards. :laf:
Turns out it's a mother with four young. I'm debating whether to kill them all.... On the one hand, I think they're kinda cool (as like me, they don't give a sheit) gruff nature and all, and not really found of slaughtering the young. On the other hand, I don't want to walk into "Momma" again.... especially when deer season rolls around as I'll be walking in before the sun rises.

Don't worry about it. While I don't have any first hand experience with badgers I think Momma will let you know when you step on one of her litter in the dark. ;yes;

Yeah those are some dandy racks for sure!! I'm more interested in the fact the grass is green & those deer all look so healthy. The drought getting better in your area FOs??
We're officially out of the drought as we've had GOOD rains since last November through mid June. Hasn't rained since the middle of last month, so it's drying up. Projected weather outlook indicates we may start seeing rain again beginning in Sept. as El Nino is gearing up...
Hope so....
At any rate, I put out a protein feeder last night. Hopefully it'll keep them around until archery season opens in Oct. :eyebrow:

Very nice!! Those badgers are bad dudes I ran over one once I thought he was dead! He didn't think much of me trying to walk up and pick him up. Lol

I was in the Army in Germany, 1973-4, out sitting a high seat one afternoon, spotted a badger coming down off the hill... quick check of my regulations book to see if they were in season, nah, next week, so I just sat and watched him forage for a while... well he came down to the road I'd walked in on, turned and headed back the way I came in from, maybe 20 yards and dropped down off to the downhill side... time passed, started getting dark, no deer this afternoon, climbed down and started my walk back to meet the forester and my ride out... got down around the area I saw the badger disappear, and heard rustling in the brush maybe 15-20 yards away... being a smart@zzed 23 year old I picked up a rock and chunked it towards the noise... must have been pretty close because it brought forth a loud growl and movement, ok so no problem... :nofgr: bad idea, well as I continued walking out, the rustling in the brush, started keeping pace with me and possible getting closer... Hmmm time to reload the rifle, just in case this escalated into anything more then a cold war... that critter must have flanked me for 70 yards or so before it finally broke off...
I made the decision there on the spot to not mess with anymore badgers unless the season was open... I went back to that stand a few more times, hoping to see that rascal again but no luck... I'd still like to have a nice badger skin wall hanging, maybe when I head west next year to hunt, I'll be fortunate enough to run into one...

30 minutes before sunset I spotted him chasing a doe. They were running for the brush line, so I only had time to throw up the rifle free hand and shoot approx. 240 yards.
Nailed him with the Kimber Montana .270 WSM and 140gr. Nosler Accubond.
Congratulations! I kept thinking that we should be seeing a picture of 'brown on the ground' and now we have. Looks better now than on your trail cam. What type of mount are you planning to have done?

I had dropped my oldest boy off at his blind and was on my way to set up under some trees along a big pasture when I spotted him 240ish yards away chasing a doe. Just had time to throw up the Kimber Montana .270WSM
He dropped at the shot. I had absolutely no clue it was the drop-tine buck, as with my eyes I could only tell that it was a good legal buck. To say I was surprised and tickled when I found out which buck I had dropped would be an understatement.
I've been hunting for him since archery season. Haven't seen him, nor captured on camera since two days after archery season opened. Figured he had moved on as bucks tend to do when hunting season and rut kick off.
He was approx. 1/2 mile away from where I had been getting pictures of him on trail cam since the summer.
Just pure luck.... right place at right time.

WOW... 240 yards reared up on yer hind legs and no rest... that is quite impressive...
no photo is appearing on this post for the deer but I went to your page and traced it down...
that is one good looking deer, will make a fine European mount...
ok what's going on here?... only the 2nd page showed up till I made the last post then it showed up as page 2... looking at that rack, with the drop tine will you have room to do a Euro mount?... looks like it may be real close to the plaque...

"Cept I'll shoot a big one if I have a chance... :biggrin: My biggest mule deer would have hit the ground just as quickly if he had been a spike. We are hunters -- who have lucked into some big critters. (After bringing in a spike and then later a big necked gnarly old buck one Fall, after a taste of the big buck my wife told me not to shoot any more with big horns! )
We have cousin who is an official record book scorer, which is how we got to know about such stuff, and he has coached Code I think on how to measure for score.
Many areas simply do not have "record book" critters at all due to genetics and local nutrition. IMO a mature critter as big as they get in that area is equivalent to a Boone & Crockett in terms of difficulty to hunt. Anyone who regularly tags such critters is an unusually good hunter whether he has anything in the book or not.
FOS, IMO for you to seek and kill a specific buck of such size is an exceptional feat of hunting!
