Turkey Call

I had a box show up in the mail today and in it was

Well Donny says where do you blow in it :roflmao: and Bobby does this

Thanks for sending it up Steve. Now I need some help. What is the arrow suppose to represent and how do I make it work. The learning process is a mite noisy again but I'm sure the wife is young enough to get over it.

Tell him to hold the striker like a pencil and make small circles and straight lines till he sounds like a turkey Barry.......I am sure it will take enough practice to get someone in trouble.

Hey thanks Semp that was cool. It's in my favorites now. There is something about liking to make music in these gizmo's. Donny[7] who wants and is taking music lessons can make it purr, cluck and sounds really good[to me]. Bob and I who cannot carry a tune on a portable radio play with it and look aaround with that frustrated look. We try to do it the same as Don but it sure comes out different. Give us time and we'll figure it out, at least they won't ask as many dumb questions as me if they ever get to come down to your country and see one of these things.

Dang this one just completely skipped by me while I was hanging out in the shop making noises of my own. Don't feel bad Barry, my wife thought that turkey track was an arrow too. :eyebrownod.

Just like Al said...hold the striker like a pencil. Make sure the surface has been conditioned with the little pad I sent and the striker should also be roughed up with sandpaper and ready to go. Now make a small elliptical circle for a cluck, and a larger ellipse for a yelp. Once you have those two mastered play with it some more and try to mimic some of the sounds that Semp directed you to. A purr is merely dragging it across the surface in a straight line.

If it still isn't working the way you think it should you either have the angle or the pressure wrong. You don't need to carve into the slate like you're making a sculpture. Light to moderate pressure is all it takes. I also don't hold the striker at a 90 degree angle to the surface...angle it slightly and get into the groove. Once you start getting the sound you want you will realize how easy it really is. Like I mentioned before keep that striker tip roughed up...being a very hard dense wood it will build up particles of slate on its tip (especially if you're trying to chisel a sound out of the call) and will start making high pitched squeaks rather than turkey sounds.

"After ya call, ya stick your finger in the middle hole on the back and hold the call up, and when the turkey replys, the arrow will point in the direction it came from."

do they even have spring time up that way ? Barry, you'll have a better chance calling them in the spring. With the amount of coyote you post up, I'm surprised if birds would dare answer

We have spring for 2 days, then a day of summer[I missed it last year] and 2 days of fall. I've been looking at the pictures you guys/gals have posted and kinda wonder why you bother hunting coyotes. With the numbers of coyotes I have up here our "fool" hens are genius's. I really don't think I'll ever get to use my calls on anything but the wife, tame birds and coyotes. Never know when I might need to know though.
