Title: Crossbow question
Post by: slagmaker on October 15, 2018, 10:58:43 PM
Ok, got a question from my cousin Baloo.

He wants to know what the best fixed broadhead is for a crossbow. His crossbow fires at 390fps if that makes a difference.
He was using a mechanical broadhead but apparently he has been having issues with premature opening. Someone has been telling him ya can't use fixed heads and he is wanting the skinny on the subject.

My question is why he won't get on here and ask it himself, but hey he is my cousin so whats family gonna do.

I passed the info on to him.

I might have to get me one of those stick slingers. Got to fire my neighbors not expensive one and was impressed with the feel.

They just passed a law in Vermont last year that anyone 50 and over can use a crossbow for regular hunting seasons without having a disability permit.

Slag,

I have more crossbows than I need, but have shot a few deer with all but one.  The link that Nasty gave looks like a decent broadhead. I used one that was similar for my first deer, but after that went to mechanical. One of the first mechanical that I used had a little rubber band that went over the blades to make sure that they didn’t open before making contact.  That might be something for Baloo to try. I do like that the mechanical give a wider cut, which is the reason that I am using them. I don’t know about the one that you fired that belongs to your neighbor, but they do have some power. I guess I like the fact that I can just hold it like a firearm and not need to be holding the draw on a compound â€" even with the let-off that many have.

I like these bad boys to, after you kill the deer you can use the broadhead to butcher it:

Yeah Jerry that was the main thing I liked was holding it like a firearm. Even the trigger pull was similar. I don't remember the brand of my neighbors but I know it was not top of the line but neither was it bottom of the line.

I know Baloo was using mechanical heads but kept having problems with them so he was wanting to go fixed heads but someone had told him you can't use fixed heads on a crossbow. I told him I was pretty sure that was pure JRB but I would do the research for him. In fact when I passed on the info from nasty he went ahead and ordered a set.

But I think I will keep researching and see what I may have to add to my personal "make that bleed over there" machines.

The 3 biggest advantages of a crossbow over a traditional or compound bow are there is no movement of you drawing  the arrow back and then you don't have to hold the arrow back while waiting for a shot, and use of a scope or red dot  :yoyo:
