....opened on Saturday. I went out yesterday morning to see if I could get a turkey or a deer. The turkeys showed up first.

The turkeys have taken a vote and from now on you are required to use a long bow (no recurve or compound) and shoot at a distance of not less than 50 yards.

Ditto that!  Pat, you are tempting me sorely to buy a crossbow.

Dave

That's great, Pat.  Wish we had more turkeys around here.  PA Game Commission closed the fall season the last few years in our area because of low numbers.
Congrats

Were you wearing the blaze orange when you got him? I have a friend who said it doesn't matter about camouflage and he hunted in his orange deer hunting gear one spring and nailed a nice tom.

I was wearing the orange when I shot the bird. Gun deer season is still open, so the orange is mandatory. This was the ninth turkey I have killed with the crossbow, and four of them were while wearing orange.

In my experience, turkeys are very alert to orange and will bolt at the sight of it, even from a great distance. However, they don't pick up on it very well in a blind, and I have had them within a few yards of me while wearing orange in my ground blinds.

This is a picture of the blind I was in, taken a couple of years ago:
