Title: My crossbow season ends soon
Post by: coyote101 on December 22, 2016, 07:11:55 PM
I went out Tuesday with a friend to try for a turkey with the crossbow. We saw a couple, but I think we were busted getting to the blind and they flew down well away from the decoys, and just kept on going. I didn't hunt yesterday but decided to give it a try this morning.

I was by myself and went back to the pop up blind where I shot the hen in October. I had the decoys out and was in the blind an hour before sunrise waiting for them to wake up. About thirty-five minutes later I heard a distant gobble. I started clucking and yelping every couple of minutes, but never heard anything closer, just the distant gobble a couple of times. I wasn't hearing any turkeys close, but it was too late to move, so I just kept calling.

Another fifteen minutes or so and I spotted a gobbler about 80 yards to my left. He was eyeballing the decoys, but not yet coming any closer. As I yelped at him, hoping to bring him within range, I saw another one come out of the woods about 35 yards to my front. I clucked once and he came a little closer then stopped broadside. I wasn't sure if he would close the distance any more, so I put the thirty yard pin on him and let fly.

The arrow hit him right where I aimed but for the first time did not pass completely through. He took off running into the woods with my nock glowing red. He went about 40 yards before piling up....stone cold dead. He was at 28 yards when I shot and the arrow hit wing bone on both sides, got the lungs and clipped the top of the heart.

He came out of the woods to the left of the picture then ran off to the right and back into the woods.

Looking back at the blind and decoys.

The blind is directly behind me.

I still have one more to get if time permits.

How cool is that. :bowingsmilie:
All I hit today was a roughie with a rock from my slingshot.

Nice one, Pat!   :congrats:

You know that you're to blame for this turkey hunting problem I have don't you Johnny? I didn't start hunting them till you made a couple of posts about fall turkey hunting back in December 2010. I've been eat up with it ever since. My wife says, "thanks a lot!"

Pat

Pat, tell your wife I said "You're very welcome!"

Here's my fall gobbler I got on December 8.  He was 18 lbs, 8 inch beard and 1 inch spurs.  Took me about an hour and a half after I found him to finally get a shot.

Nice bird Semp!! LBL bird??

I was hunting private ground, Glen.  I don't think LBL allows fall turkey hunting.

That's cool either way. I would like to hunt there in the Spring sometime. I think that would be a lot of fun!!
