I'm thinking it should be shooting better groups. :wo: Have you tried the CCI or Rem 40 gr HPs? I've got a Marlin .22mag, 983 I think, bolt action, and it'll shoot a group at 75 yds you can cover with a dime.

HaMeR

Remington 40gr PSP  40gr JHP  33gr V-Max

CCI-HP+V  30gr JHP+V

Winchester Dynapoint Mag 45gr Dynapoint

Federal 50gr  JHP

Federal Premium 30gr Speer TNT HP{which I really wanted to be the one}

I had a Marlin that loved Winchester Supreme 34g JHP's.  Tried them in my Ruger and found it also shot them better than all the other ammo I tried.  Believe me, I tried a lot of different .22 Mag ammo.  The Winchester stuff is alittle pricey, but it's very accurate. To top it off, it sure works great on fox.

I've got to work for the bank today & my route will take me right past Gander Mtn & another very nice store. And since it's hourly + mileage i may as well make the most of this trip hat with gas being what it is & all.  :eyebrow: :eyebrow:  Gonna look for some other stuff to try. I've had a couple people I respect tell me the 50's just didn't expand as well as they would have liked & runners & crawlers were too often.

Yeah, that rifle is pretty much junk, Glen.     Bring it down to the LBL and I'll give you a few bucks for it.  I might be able to use some parts off it.

HaMeR

Yeah I was fearing that Semp!! I guess if all I'm gonna get is a few bucks for it then I may as well just leave it here so I have 1 less mater stake to buy.

Got a box of Hornady FTX to try out today. Hope to get those shot this weekend.

The cci 40s shot better for me but not alot better than the 40 winchesters. The 30 were bad.

CCP

Shoot as many as you can rim fires can be very picky.

My Lakefeild 22mag is opening up on groups from literally thousands and thousands of rounds throughout its life. However 32 Rem shoot the best groups in it, but have found not to be so great on coyotes. I really tried to make them work but way to much inconsistency in killing after 10 or 12 I swore off them for coyotes.

The Dynapoints just plain suck and weighing cartridges in a box of Dynapoints you quickly see there is absolutely NOTHING uniform about them. You will be lucky to find 5 with the same weight and they aren't small spreads either. 3" to 4" groups are common in my rifle with them and that was with  weighing individually using 2 boxes from different lots.

CCI didn't shoot much better than the Dynapoints in my rifle but they were consistently made and a decent killer on coyotes. If these shot better in my gun I would have used them more. My favorite commercial loaded 22 mag ammo in my gun for consistent groups and killing power is the Win 22 mag JSP/JHP by far and have killed every animal, invertebrate, fish etc. that lived in the South with that round.

My favorite 22 mag hand load has been 3.8 grains  powder from the Winchester 40 grain JHP then seating a Speer 218 bee 46 grain jacketed flat nose. The Speer bee bullet flat out kills, hits with authority and expands perfect every time marginally more  accurate than the Win 40 JHP but still less than the 32 Rem. Haven't loaded any in several years but have began the process of setting backup and will post some pics and a story later in the year here.

A quick stop at the store the other day only offered the Hornady rds. Didn't make it to Gander Mtn due to time constraints. Drove past Dicks Sporting the same day on the way to FinFeatherFur Outfitters where I knew the largest RF ammo selection would be. Turned out I was wrong again. Hopefully I can get to another store & the range in the next 2 weeks. No shooting today since the winds are already ripping thru here at 5:30AM & are forecast to hit the top teens thru tomorrow afternoon late. I'll find something I hope. I still have the HMR that I have a ton of confidence in on shot placement.

HuntnCarve

Glen, you better get that rifle/ammo figured out soon.  Cause Diane's going to want a chuck gun she can depend on.  :laf:
If you lived closer I could let you test all the .22 Mag ammo I have sitting in the gun safe that did not work for me.

Meantime, that .17 WSM (Winchester Super Magnum) is looking more and more intriguing to me! -Just another lame excuse on my part to justify another rimfire. LOL!

Dave,

I think it is becoming clear that HaMeR is the "sighting in" person of the family and Diane is the "killing machine" in the family.  Glen is always happy when there is a new firearm to sight in since it gives him a chance to shoot.  After that, the firearm belongs to Diane.

Jerry

HuntnCarve

Jerry, I have to agree with your analysis of the situation.  I can only imagine the tremendous pressure on Glen to properly sight in one of Diane's shooting irons...So far he's been doing an admirable job, as I've heard of no misses from his better half. :laf:

Dave

HaMeR

  Uh yeah Jerry. About that. You could have PM'ed that info to Dave. Now everybody knows the secret to Diane's groundhog success & I'll prolly spend 4 days at the LBL sighting everybodies rifles in now!!  :doh2:

I would take you up on that offer if I were closer Dave.

I've found the 17WSM is coming out in an all new Savage, 1885 Low Wall, Volquartsen has committed, & another unnamed manufacturer has decided to pick it up. CZ wants to see how things go 1st. Guess mine will be a Savage B.Mag!!

I was hoping that Ruger would come out with it in their 77 model, but I might just have to take a look at the Savage?  But then again, CZ's are pretty sweet!

Dave

HaMeR

CZ is taking a wait & see approach. That's what I wanted too. So I emailed them & they want to see how popular it will become before chambering a 527 in it. I'll get the Savage ASAP & see who all ends up chambering for it later.

I only shoot Winchester Supreme 34gr. JHP and 40gr. JHP in my .22WMR's. If the rifle doesn't shoot either well.... down the road it goes.

Of the two, I especially like the 40gr. JHP. Works well on feral hogs and the various exotics found in my AO.
