Title: Marlin 22 pump
Post by: Bills Custom Calls on April 03, 2011, 05:27:38 PM
Pat. date March 24 1908

I bought this gun probably 8 years ago or so at an auction  brought it home shot it a couple times and put it in the gun cabinet where it has stayed until today when I decided to take it for a walk in the field.Well I didn't see anything to shoot at so I brought it back home put it back in the cabinet.Probably take it out through the week a bit shoot it some and let Kurtis carry into the field next week end when he is here

The gun shows a bit of wear but it still shoots good and everything is good and tight on it

Bill, don't ya' just love vintage firearms.

I could be mistaken, as some early models are quite similar, your rifle looks to be a model 37 Marlin. My reference book says the 37 has a full length mag tube and 24" round barrel, a take down. Caliber: 22 long rifle, long, and short. One of the first Marlin rifles, they were made from 1913-16.

I could only guess at a $$ value but the future memories it can provide you will surely be priceless.  :highclap:

The Barrel is  20 inches I really wish I could read the model # on it I can see a V on the end of the # So I started to think it could it could be a Varmit but I don't know for sure and I will look this gun over a bit more tonight
Your right about the memories I bet this gun already has a few

Bill we had one around when i was a kid my uncle found it in a empty house hid behind the closet door it had the octical barrel and the numbers 1905-6 on it i realy like that old gun even though it was worn out you had to dig the fired brass out with a knife everytime ,it was time consuming but still alot of fun for a kid.

Bill... a little more intel.

From 1906 till 1922 Marlin produced six different models of 22 rim-fire pump rifles, all look similar to yours, the model 18 (1906-1909), 20 (1907-1920), 20 S (1920-1922), 25 (1909-1910), 29 (1913-1916) and 32 (1914-15). Most models have their slight differences.  From what I have found the only reference to a 20” barrel is the "Model 18 Baby Slide Action". It came in either round or octagon 20”barrel. Plain straight grip stock and slide handle (certain other models had a grooved slide handle).
It appears 1906 was the first year Marlin started building firearms.  If yours is a model 18 it was their first attempt at rim-fire pump rifles, maybe their first rifle of any type.

Bill, I see from your other post that you young fellers had a great day out with the little 22. :highclap:
I know you are interested in finding which model you have. Regrettably, none of reference books I have now go into any great detail about older Marlin Firearms. The book below provides "a bunch mo-stuff”, specifically a section on the early pump rifles which may help determine the model you have.
