I latch of some sort?
Looks like maybe the raised ball looking humps are a way to adjust it closer or further from whatever it hooks to or latches.
Not a latch. "I've been working on the railroad".(poorly sung)
A tie puller?
Is it to hold a spike so someone can hammer it in?

Railroad spike puller.
Pat
Pat has this one correct. A railroad spike puller, they normally use a very large claw bar to pull spikes but when there are two rails right next to each other, the large puller can't reach the spikes because the rails are too close together. So to pull up spikes in a tight spot, they put this tool under the head of it and use a claw bar to pry up on the lugs.

Now that is interesting
I am going to give Jimbo the partial win on this one :innocentwhistle:

I meant spike puller when I said tie puller :doh2:
I mean how are you going to pull a 8 inch square, creosote soaked, piece of timber with that thing. I dont know why I called it a tie :sarcas3:
But it's all good..it was fun
I'm not splitting the prize! :alscalls:
