Jim, didn't you have that on the front of your kayak, but had to put on a different light because the DNR didn't know what it was?

Go ahead and tell them what it is.

How many hints do I need to give them?  I have attempted to light their path while they are on the water, but some don't see the light.

 That thing lights up like an old Flintstone camera flash?
I'm imagining the inside of a toaster but it's not bright enough to see in the dark with the toaster on.

Well, it is not like what I've seen Indians use but the hints make it sound like a fire basket that you hang over the front of a boat while cruising slowly at night to spear fish that the fire lights up.  Nowadays some kind of regular flashlight should work but a fire basket is a tradition for some Native people in central BC.  Fall before last one early night on my way home from hunting deer I saw several boats/canoes with fire baskets out on a big lake north of Merritt, BC.  I stopped at my usual pull out to change clothes and an Indian man there told me what they were doing.  Looked like fun.

If my recall is correct they were spearing spookaleetz (sp) also known as burbot or fresh water ling.  I think that some tribes speared salmon the same way.

Finaly. It was also used to hunt deer and other critters. The eyes would reflect in the light from the fire. Sort of like an early day spotlight.
