...well ....finally made my mind up I should have said.

I ordered Boyds thumbhole varminter, in a pepper laminate the other day. I'm pretty cranked.
I called and talked to them and they told me they were three weeks out though  :noway: So...guess I gotta set and wait.
She's beautiful, beautiful I tell ya.

How many fancy peppered distress calls ya think a guy could spin outta that cog of a stock if he whittled er up.  :sneer:  :innocentwhistle:

ROOSTER

Sweet!  :yoyo:  Let us know how it fits when ya get it. I've thought about ordering one from them, just haven't spoke with anyone who owns one.

FinsnFur

Kinda like your first new car...ya dont want to be eating in it just quite yet..... It might be a while before I take an tape and paint to the new stock.

I camo'ed the stock stock... :sneer: hehe the stock stock...that worked out pretty nice ey?
Ok anyway...the original stock, and it turned out nice I think considering I'd never done it before.
But I just never did like the style or feel of it.

Anybody wants it BTW, it'll be going in the trash.

Yeah ok, thanks a lot JD. I ended up taking half the day off work just I'd not miss it again.  :rolleye:

You guys that said, "be prepared for a little tool work" were spot on. I think it took me three hours to get the barrel and action to set in there how I wanted them.
Of course I was being as carefull as possible so I drug it out.

She fits like a glove, I am really impressed with this thing.

Sweet Jim. :highclap:

Got one very similar to that & love it (thumbhole style that is). Only thing it's a pain to shot left handed when ya need too. :madd:

FinsnFur

LOL! I bet it is.
I dont think I could shoot left handed if my right one fell off and it was to save my life.  :nono:

Well, it's as done as it's gonna get. And to be honest I don't think I'd buy another stock from Boyds. At least not for any of my Rugers.

The trigger guard hole had to be tooled out so much that it practically recessed the whole part too deep into the stock just to get the screw to reach.
The barrel groove turned out real nice as I took plenty of wood out of it to keep it from touching anywhere. Thank god I dont have a bull barrel, I'd still be grinding.
The floor plate wouldn't fit properly regardless of any configuration I predicted it needed as far as tooling and removing more wood.
Keep in mind they say on their site;

Exteriors are completely shaped, and in areas of wood to metal fit,
we have left proud wood over metal so you can do final fitting to get that perfect wood
to metal fit.

As a last resort an no other option I ended up shimming the base of the floor plate hinge where it screwed through the stock into the frame of the action , JUST so I was able to close it and make it fit respectfully :rolleye:

Well jim it looks really good.My stevens has a blind mag so no floorplate to worry about. How is the weight,is it much heavyer than the factory. That thing looks really good Jim and i love the feeling of a thumbhole stock.Good job and thanks for an honest review Jim. :highclap:

It had a synthetic stock prior, and believe it or not this didn't add much weight at all. I should have weighed the two before hand and never thought of it, but I don't think it's a whole pound difference.

It DOES look good, thanks. I really like now that it's done and it is soooooo comfortable.
