LAKE OF THE WOODS - KENORA, ONTARIO CANADA
Another Minnow...

This is a darn interesting picture and story even if you aren't into fishing,
But please show it to anyone you know that likes to fish.

FYI:  This sturgeon is still alive, just worn out from the fight.
As the sports fishermen they are, they turned him loose after the photo.

This Sturgeon was caught on the LAKE OF THE WOODS, KENORA, ONTARIOc
It weighed out at over 1,000 lbs and measured out at 11'1".

It was 56" around the girth and took over 6 and a half hours, and 4 dozen beers, for the 4 guys taking turns at the reeling it in.

Any Sturgeon OVER about five feet has to be released unharmed and cannot be removed from the water.

They are brood / breeding stock and probably older than most of us.

I really don't know if the photo is real or not, but I think the men and fish have been Photoshopped onto that background.  The reason I say that is that I am just trying to learn more about Photoshop and it looks like a job that I would do on a cut and paste - the edges around the men are too sharp (no hair out of place etc.) and there is a slight black line along the right hand side of some of the men in the pictures.  Again, don't know if the fish is real, but I think the picture has been doctored.

Born and raised in the southern highlands of Appalachia, I'm just an ol' country boy who enjoys calling coyotes... nothing more, nothing less.

If it was photoshopped they did a real good job on the reflections in the water.
Don't bring shame to our sport.

He died for dipshits too.

I didn't think they got that big, but after reading the snopes thread, now realize they do.  I was looking at how calm the water looked in front of the fish and thought 10 guys and a 1,000 lb fish have to make more of a disturbance than what's there.

I remember that photo when it came out in our local paper.  It is on the lower Fraser River in BC, somewhere up or down from Chilliwack.  Snopes places it there as well.  That is a fishing guide outfit.

The largest one I've personally been in on was  a little over 8 feet long that I helped my uncle land a few miles above Bonneville Dam on the Columbia.  He'd caught much larger sturgeon.   All sturgeon have to be released on the Fraser.

Check out the sturgeon photos on the links below.  None are as big as the one in the first photo above, but the reason it has made the Internet rounds is that it is an unusually large one.

Last Sept. I had a huge sturgeon lying in front of me while I was fly fishing for pink salmon.  A guide confirmed to me later that it was a sturgeon.  The quote below is lifted from my Sept. 23 Freshwater Fishing post about fly fishing for salmon.  It was on  on a section of the Fraser where they catch a lot of sturgeon though normally they are in deep water.
(I don't know how to set it off as a quotation).

"Sunday morning before church I had an odd experience while fishing for pink salmon.  In a wide flat stretch of moderately moving river where I'd fished a few days earlier, I noticed a ripple in the current out in water waist deep.  It looked like a big rock that stuck up near the surface that current bulged over and around and left a long streak of eddy downstream from it.  I hadn't seen anything like that when I fished there a few days ago, but the river has dropped a few inches so I didn't pay it any mind except to avoid snagging on it.   It stayed there unmoving for a good 20 minutes and as I had waded near it, I let a fly drift down in front of it thinking a salmon might be lying there.  As the fly passed in front of the bulge of water, a big male salmon bit it hard and made a good fight.  I released him and drifted the fly to the same spot, though now the bulge seemed spread out a bit, which I took to be wind ruffling the waves.  This time a bright male fresh from the ocean grabbed the fly.  He was prime eating so I took him to the cooler in my vehicle.  On my return, the bulge and any trace of ripple were gone."
