Title: WV Season off to rough start
Post by: alscalls on April 28, 2008, 01:15:08 PM
I went out this mourning in the pouring rain and sat there waiting for some kind of action when I hear my buddy say this is a bunch of crap! It rained hard and was cold.
The card in the corner says Fins And Fur but it got wet and did not show up good. The sun was trying to come out here. :eyebrownod:
I had one decoy out so I could move quick if they started gobbling.
My friend was really wanting to go home, but I kept him out anyway.....You cant kill em from the couch! :nono:
and I saw a coyote for my efforts! He would not come close enough though.
My friend saw me taking this photo and said how can you possibly be enjoying this day? I just grinned........
Then my phone vibrated and it was a friend of mine that I gave a walnut box call too....Guess what he done with that call to get out of the rain.......a yummy Jake! I wish we had seen him I would have done the same.

At least you got out Al, I've been working my hind end off.  Season has already started, a few friends got birds and rubbed it in... but   THEY FINALLY APPROVED MY VACATION for next week  :yoyo:  !!!!

The rain shut work down here today too. I decided that since I was feeling better than I have been I should just stay in the house.  :laf:

Still a coyote sighting was worth it I would think.

Next week looks better for the weather so far. I am afraid I may not do so good this year this is the only week I have off and the weather sucks. I could probably get my rifle and get one easy but what fun would that be? I will stick with the shotgun and call them in or go without. I just enjoy being out.

Today was better....the turkeys were gobbling and I could have killed one but I passed him to let the guy I was with kill him and.......they came running(three of them) and hung up at 55 yds. strutting and double tripple gobbling! One of them came to about 35yds and peeked around a hudge white oak I could see him but the guy I was calling for could not. I let him walk away and a hen came to my right and took the gobblers over the hill with no shot taken.
I was drinking a Pepsi trying to convinse my friend that we were not busted yet and the gobblers would return when they finished with that hen, When all of a sudden GOBBBBBBBBBBBBBBLE They were back and I could see thier fans comming up the hill! At 50 yds. they could not yet see the decoys for that tree and my friend said "I can kill him" I told him no do not shoot yet let em get real close and we will pull a double.
He said" they are leaving and I can kill him" I agin said no not yet.......BANG he shoots and the bird at 50 yds. dose a flip and flyes into a tree and BANG I tried to finish the botched hunt but he flew away.
I looked at him and he said SORRY
I said listen and learn cause that wont happen again with me. I would rather see him walk away than to have to wonder is he dead. I made him put every feather in a bag to bring back as a reminder of why we do not shoot turkes with a shotgun out of your effective range! :argh:
that leaning tree way in the back, that is were the turkeys were!
here I am zoomed on the decoys...We had to put them up quick.
this is your trophy when you ask someone to call you a bird and you dont listen to a firm dont shoot!
They were strung out for five feet  :roflmao: And he actually picked them up :roflmao: :roflmao:
He is a good friend and I love to do that to him when he screws up he is just green in the woods.
The best part of my day? Watching him fall asleep in the woods and falling over........ :roflmao: :laf: :hahaha: :roflmao:

Well I hope he learned. I'm not bashin your buddy but when you go with someone more experienced than you are you just have to learn to trust that guy no matter what the outcome might be.  :rolleye:  I sure hope you guys can get together again so he can make you proud Al!! Good Luck!!

I am making him go to the same area tomorrow and I hope I can show him how dumb a turkey is... The turkey being him.... :roflmao: :roflmao: I  too learned the hard way but I had no one to tell me dont shoot or I would not have. He is a dear friend and I kid him a lot but I want him to feel bad about this it is the only way he will learn from it and be more patient.
never the less if I do not get to hunt for myself I know I can still call em right in with the best of them! And it felt good to see them birds working in front of us. If I get the chance tomorrow I will yell "MY TURN! " And when they pop those heads up I will shoot one and tell him thats how ya do it. :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:

He knows I am only tough on him cause he busts my chops about always getting a bird when I want to. I have even been lucky enough to pretend to be bold enough to say.........I will kill one Wed. While you are at work, and actually kill one and send him a pic over the phone! :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:
To him I make it look easy but I want him to know it is hard work.

Today was real nice and the birds would gobble at a sneeze! I worked five gobblers for an hour and a half they gobbled more times in a row than I think I have ever heard!!! I had em at 40 yds with an embankment blocking my view. All I could see was part of thier fans every now and then. they hung up and a hen flew up in a tree and it was..... hold real still for fifteen min. while she watched our decoys then she flew down without a sound and took all those gobblers away(about eight oclock). No more gobbling until about 10-10:30 but they would not come. still a very nice day indeed.

Well first I became a big fan of Fins And Fur....
Then giving credit where its due, I bought a real good call from kees calls. Thanks Brent works well. :eyebrownod:
Then I finally got a day to call one for myself and that bird was HOT! He gobbled almost non stop at me for what seemed like 400yds. He then hung up because a hen cut between us so everytime she yelped I would cut her off cutting and yelping and he just would not come.........So I gobbled......He ran at me stopping to strut @ 50 yds. he gave me and that hen a real show strutting and drumming and gobbling.........I gave a fighting purr and he turned to fight and at 25 yds. Bang He flopped and raised his head to get up so I busted him two more times and BIG BIRD DOWN BOYS!

Way to go Al!  :yoyo:

My season has been a bust. Nothing at all happened on youth day. Of course the first day was miserable wet, but they were gobblin', just on the neighbors though. Didn't get to go again til this past tuesday. No gobblin' goin on whatsoever. I tried to entice one with some yelps to no avail, so I decided to just sit down and see what happens. Before I could get set up, I noticed two longbeards at about a hunderd yards closing in real fast and my gun was leaning against a tree.  :madd: When they hit a low spot, I was able to pick it up and wait, but I was in the wide open. When they got within about 35-40 yards, they noticed me so I leveled the shotgun, had trouble finding the sights but was able to squeeze one off. He rolled so I started toward him. When I got about half way there, he was up and running then hit the air. I blew it.

Today I just got wet, no gobbles at all. I did whack a groundhog with the .22 pistol when I got home though.  :eyebrow:

I went out today to call a bird in for another fella and I called in two hens and a Jake. They fed in front of me about 50 yds behind the shooter for a good while...........I had that Jake all worked up and he came to 15 yds of me 2 or 3 times.
They then went over the hill a little and GOBBLE.....GOBBLE Two more comming and they were all out of site of my shooter!
That damn Jake came back and got scared of something @ 25yds and they all started alarming sooooooooo BANG I shot the only bird I could, the Jake YUMMY  5" beard and 1/2" spurrs nice for a Jake.
All the time my shooter knew they were there but could not see anything until they started to fly
He said to me I do not know how you sit still for that :nono:
For a slow start, I have had a great season and filled all of my tags.
OHHHH! and we had some coyote pups come in raisin cain before light! Wow that was nuts! We did not get to see any though, just heard them.

Be careful.......A lot of guys I call for says those birds are too far and I just smile and call em right in. Two things can happen, The birds are closer than it seems........a hill blocking the sound ect.
Or birds can and sometimes will give in and fly your way....They usually fly up in a tree and look for that hen though, thats where moving a decoy comes in handy with some fishing line  It can be a lot of work but man I am telling you Never say they wont come. I called that Jake this mourning out of a guys garden at the bottom of a 300 yd long hill, through some rough woods. How do I know? His crawl was full of parsley and that guy is growing it. I checked :eyebrownod: I could barley hear them birds gobble today until they broke over the edge where I could see them. You probably already know this stuff but give them neighbor birds a yell for a couple hours and when they shut up wait till they gobble again later in the day and hit em again they will come....not always but they will sometimes.

Someday we've gotta meet up and shoot the bull over a camp fire.  I bet we could share some good stories.

Yall have speedie marinade down south ?   If not I'll send ya a bottle to try out.. seriously.  Just north of where I live in NY state made it famous.  Or you can make your own without a problem.   If I'm not to energetic I buy the State Fare Original to use, I dont like the chicken stuff they put out.

I have shot two jakes in the past. The first one I didn't know was a jake because of the angle, just got a glimpse of the beard when he turned, so I shot. The second was late in the season and I was getting skunked, soooo. I could see no difference in the taste.

I know what you mean Al, by calling them in from the neighbors, done that in the past. Right now we have little league every saturday, and I only take half days  vac. to get more hunting in while burning less of my vacation, so I have to knock off early to get to work by 10:30. I know I just need to bite the bullet and take some whole days and do it right.

That sure is a nice bird Trenton shot!! Congrats to him on that one.  :congrats: :congrats:

The 24th huh??  :wo:  Our season winds up on the 18th & it is less than 2 hours to Jim's house. So if I were to have that day off I could leave here around 3:30AM & make real good time in your direction. Of course this is all subject to the Wifes approval you know.  :eyebrownod:

Actually it wouldn't be this year tho. I would rather show up when I could use at least 2 days of the 6 day tag!!  :laf:
