Drug Tests Could Become Welfare Requirement
States Consider Requiring Random Drug Testing

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- As more Americans turn to government assistance to ride out the recession, they may find themselves required to submit to random drug testing.

Lawmakers in at least eight states want recipients of food stamps, unemployment benefits or welfare to undergo tests.

A West Virginia lawmaker is proposing the most comprehensive measure in the country. Republican Craig Blair said, "If so many jobs require random drug tests these days, why not these benefits?"

Lawmakers in other states are offering similar, but more modest proposals.

Supporters of drug tests said they're motivated out of a concern for their constituents' health and whether welfare recipients can put themselves on more solid financial footing once the economy rebounds.

But proponents have conceded that they also want to send a message: You don't get something for nothing.

Poverty and civil liberties advocates fear the strategy could backfire, discouraging some people from seeking financial aid and making already desperate situations worse.

I fully agree with ya HaMeR. I've been twice in the last 3 months. I think the politicians need to be taking them too.

I think it is a good idea. test them at random and frequently.

I would much rather my tax money go to welfare drug screening. That would definitely lower the national deficit.

I hope this comes to pass, there is good reason the Drug Cartels work so hard to get the Drugs into the US because we are the only country in the world that buys the drugs for the users. But you just watch the liberals. cc

Yeah baby. I have to take a drug test to drive and work, with random ones in between. 'round here, we may have a lot fewer people on the system...yee haw.
