Fox Attacks Worshippers in Church Scene looked like something out of a Hitchcock movie pastor says.
11/14/2008

It wasn't the devil that came knocking, but it was a scene of horror that erupted when 20-year-old Alicia Duncan opened a door at the Liberty Baptist Church in Inman, S.C., to lead a group of worshippers into the main church building last week.

As soon as the pastor's daughter opened the door, a rabid gray fox attacked the woman.

"If you've ever seen Alfred Hitchcock's 'The Birds' movie, when all of the people are running around, that's how it was," Pastor David Duncan—and Alicia's father—told a local news reporter..

The fox then clamped onto another woman's ankle before rushing at and scratching other people in the room. As the commotion moved inside the fellowship hall, several men used metal chairs to hit the animal in an effort to protect themselves.

A 6-year-old child was also bitten in the melee and at least four people received scratches. By the time officers arrived at the scene, the fox was pretty busted up and dying in the parking lot.

Tests are being conducted to determine if the gray fox had rabies. If it did, all of those scratched or bitten will need to undergo rabies treatment.

Earlier that week, a Mount Pleasant, S.C., boy and his father were attacked by a rabid fox while walking to the boy's school bus stop.

There were 162 confirmed cases of rabies in animals in South Carolina last year. Seven cases alone have been confirmed in Spartanburg County so far this year where Inman is located.
