Title: 2009 Spring Turkey Contest
Post by: HaMeR on April 06, 2009, 10:04:52 PM
The FnF Spring 09 Turkey Contest

...begins 4-7-09. I know it's a little late but we gotta make do with it now. Sorry.

Ends May31

We're going to run two categories again, one for the biggest Turkey and one for the best photographed Hero Shot.
The winner of each category will win a $75 gift card for Cabelas  :yoyo:

Biggest Turkey

    * This will be judged by beard length and spur length only. (if you shoot a tiny turkey with a 40" beard... your going to Cabelas.)
    * You will need to photograph the beard with a ruler or tape measure, and the same with the spurs. The actual measurement must be easily distinguishable in the pictures. Showing the entire beard in at least one picture with the ruler or tape measure.
    * Add the total measurements of each spur and the beard, highest accumulated inches will be the winner.

Post your total with your post confused yeah post your total with your post....that made sense didnt it?

    * In such a case your turkey has more then one beard, both beards can be included

Best Photograph
This will be judged by the members in the form of a poll.
Were looking for the ultimate Hero Shot, be creative. Were gonna be looking for some serious aw factor. Sunsets, natural settings, etc. Were talking desktop wall paper

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    * All entries MUST be posted in this thread.
    * All submitted photos must have something in the picture that says Fins and Fur. Write it on your shirt, your forehead, write it in the dirt, on a piece of paper...it don't matter but it must be in the picture.
    * All participants must be of Reg Member status by the end of the contest. That means 25 posts under your belt to be eligible or to vote.
    * One person cannot win both categories. The biggest Turkey will pretty much be self decisive by the measurements. This participant will automatically be non eligible for the photo contest.

Have fun and good luck to ALL   :yoyo:

Finally got the pics on the computer. I was hunting out of a blind and seeing a few birds but not the larger toms.
Tuesday I  thought I would change tactics a take a few decoys in my back pack and go higher in the hills. At 0dark thirty
I had set up in choke point in a high wall pasture. At 6:30 I did some soft tree clucks and got a response from area where my blind was ?? I got a little more louder and heard two gobblers but they sounded like they where on other side of the
hill behind me. I then let them have it with a loud aggressive hen talk when they gobbled I would let them have it again
this went on for 20 minutes then it sounded like they where moving away, but they where in a draw area coming to me.
I was expecting them to come in on my left and I happen to see movement on my right and there they where 2 toms
in full strut side by side. I slowly turned that way and got the gun ready and when the larger one was clear I gave him a
cut on the mouth call and his head came up and a load of 5's where on the way. Sorry about the pictures my right hand is still in a soft cast with stitches [come out mon the 4th ] wife was at work so I was at home alone trying to take the pics. The bird was 24 lbs 2 oz 11 1/8 beard 3/4 spurs  Good sized bird for down here in elk country.  Thanks Steve (http:// (http://

Headed for the timber friday noon. Talked to the landowner and did a little scouting. Sat. morning dragged myself out just after sunup ( too many brews at pregame).  A few yelps on the ridge got an immediate response, had gobblers coming in fast.!  Quick fiind a spot to sit. No decoys, here we go!  Thought they were coming up the ravine but they showed up higher on the ridge back to my right. Couldn't see them thru the timber very well and had to turn and raise up on my knees.  They turned down behind a downed tree at 25 yds and one stopped in an opening, giving me the evil eye. It's head was framed perfectly and I let 'er rip! Three gobblers flew away but I didn't know for sure if I had one down so I didn't shoot again. Went around for a look-see and I'll be danged. They must have forgot to put Shot in that shell!   :laf:  :rolleye:
That's the one I didn't get,, I'll add the rest of the story later. Mean while here some pics
   11.25 beard  7/8" spurs

   The rest of the story,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
After that early failure I decided to regroup.  Headed back to town for the decoys I had forgotten and some much needed aspirin.
Decided to try another spot,. I had seen birds earlier out in the pasture but there was no way to approach without spooking them. They were moving away towards some timber so I let them go.  Now I got my gear and a sandwich headed after them.  3/4 mile walk  to the trees and a little farther in along a small creek I found a comfy looking spot for lunch and a nap.  Walking to set some decoys thought I saw a bird run off but not sure.  No response to my calling so I settled in thinking something would wander by sooner or later.
After a snack and a rest I noticed a spot waaay up on the hill to the east. Binocs showed two turkeys.  A few yelps and GOBBLE!  Couple more,,  GOBBLE GOBBLE!  Okay, they're hot! Three toms And they're on the way!
They went north and were out of sight over the hill but there was a fenceline that came down the hill I figured they'd follow.  After 10 mins. I gave a few more yelps but got no response. At 20 mins. I heard a half gobble that sounded like it was to my SE?  Turn a little, thinking they might have snuck down a fold out of sight.  Then saw movement back to my left.  They were 75 yds. away but had been coming in right behind a tree that was blocking my view. At 50 yds they reached the creek and went into Slowmo.  Sipping water and staring at the decoys,,, no displays no gobbling.  Very suspicous of the decoys. A few soft clucks finally talked one a little closer after 10 min. and I put him down at 35 yds with a load of 6s.    :yoyo: :yoyo:   And there you have it.   'bender

In my first post you could not see the end of the tape and this upset someone so finally found time to upload a pic. The beard was salt curing along with the tail. I am sorry about not getting it on here sooner but I've been trying to get caught up with things because monday they cut open my left hand and that will tie me up for a few weeks. Thanks Steve(http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc332/linemansteve/may09-pics004.jpg)
