Man thats the one thing I miss from Indiana.............is the squirrel hunting! The squirrels we have up here are those lil' pine squirrels. They about the size and in some cases smaller then a chipmonk.

I remember ole Dad waking me up before school and stating "No school today boy. Its a Rahm holiday". This was his way of say were going hunt'n for something. Plus there were the days we hit before school and right after school. Heck come to think of it, those were the days when I could still have my smoke poles in the back window of the truck at school.

Yip, I sure miss squirrel hunt'n.

My dad always told me we were studying wildlife and if the school called to ask where I was he would tell them I was taking an advanced class in wildlife biology.  If they asked anymore, he would tell them the whole story of the hunt and the cleaning where he would explain the body parts to me.

I am sure the sounds on the foxpro would work, I have been calling squirrel for years with two rocks.  Just pick two rocks up out of your drive way on the way to the woods. ( If you are going around a creek, creek rock work alot better) and when you are making your stand, tap the two rocks together to make a clicking noise.  After a couple of clicks, rub the rocks together to make a grinding noise.   The grinding noise works expecially well after all the nuts have dropped and the squirrels are out of the trees.  Man do they come a running thinking you have found a tree full of nuts and they aren't getting any.  It also works good for early season squirrels to get them moving after you just sit down.  Season here in Indiana starts the 15th like always this year.  Good Luck.

You laugh now, but try it... You can either click them together or you can turn them in your hand and let them make a crunching sound like a squirrel cutting.

I often use my foxpro with the squirrel in distress sound.  I take a leafy branch and thrash it around on the ground and the squirrels think something has caught another limb rat and come out to give the predator hell. Then I thump 'em in the head..

LOL! that's a good idea.
The boy has been hounding me to take him out. Might have to do that this weekend. The ticks are still a little thick around here to get in too deep calling coyotes.

Actually yeah, we did!
I found myself staggering around at the last minute searching for squirrel sounds, but I managed to find some excellent ones.
Pulled a lil background out of them with GoldWave and we was on our way.

We lured 5 squirrels within range. Kyle took the first three shots and came up empty handed, got disgusted with himself and was ready to go. I shot two following those, and then he was irritated with me for taking his shots.

But we had fun

Nice going Jim,your supposed to let the kid kill them.Just kidding. In my opinion squirrel hunting is the best way to get a kid into hunting. It is fast paced and it is a blast. Not to menton they are pretty good eatin.I was planning to take my oldest son this year but his gun is still a little big on him.I cant wait till he is big enough.
