Title: Squirrel Weapons
Post by: vvarmitr on September 06, 2007, 11:29:10 AM
What's your weapon of choice for squirrels?  I've used 22lr pistols/rifles & shotguns.  Mostly I use a shotgun cause it is early season that I hunt squirrels & the leaves aren't off enough to shoot well w/ a 22lr. Plus I have a hard time sending a bullet through a squirrels head & off to parts unknown. Urban sprawl is all around here, why you would think it was SanAntonio. :pout:
I've been in gun shops where this has become a heated debate. :madd:  :argh:  :mad2:  :mad3:
So let's get a turd stirring, key kicking, typo tandem discussion going. Whatasay? :eyebrow:

First of the season Lil-man uses his shotguns, me the .22 rifle

As the leaves start to fall lil-man takes over the .22 and I take the .22 pistol, .17HMR, or 22 mag. Now you are prob saying to your self that the 17 and mag are too much. But I like to keep the guns going through cycles so none fell left out.
And tis only head shots unless the pistol is off & I like seeing how far away I can tack one to a tree w/ the  17 & mag. Plus, we see alot of yotes during tree rat season and it never hurts to have the ultimate coyote rifle along in the 17 HMR (Sense we are flipping a turd I thought i would throw that one in there  :roflmao:)

I'm in awh's corner on this one.  Although, I have been known to use the AR when they're on the corn pile.  I consider it an instant chaff setup.

410 bolt action shotugn.  wanna teach a youngster to pick and chose his shots give him the shells needed for to take one shot a squirell for the limit.  he will either shoot three shells at each and quickly run out thus ending his fun.  or he will wait and make sure he has a good and clean shot and take his limit.

My son uses a 10/22 and I use my 17HMR. We do have to be a little careful when there up a tree. Just wait for the shot with a tree in the back ground.

For small varmints I love the HMR!

I normally take one of the .22LRs out - usually a single shot, but sometimes a bolt gun with more than one chance.

We have fox and grey squirrels here, good eating.

I usually reach for my trusty 20 gauge pump, Ithaca model 37 featherweight.

410 shotgun or the 22lr bolt or semi-auto maybe even the pistol depending on mood. I used to use the 22mag but after they started putting in housing additions I wasnt feeling comfortable with that. 410 is for when the leaves are on the trees and the 22's for after the leaves have had a started falling.

Danny,
Naw, the little 20 ain't bad at all. I used it for several years shooting skeet and trap. Now on the other hand, I've got a couple of Winchester pump 12's that will rock your world.

I have 3 savage 22's  a striker bolt action pistol a Mk 2 bolt action rifle  and M64 semi auto rifle.
I use one of them, they are all zeroed in at about 30 yards using CCI sub sonics, if I miss one in a tree, or go thru one
the sub sonic won't travel as far as a hi velocity round,  and it's a bit quieter when shooting.

I usually use a scattergun (870 12 or 20 ga or Benelli Nova) early.  I just bought a Savage Mark II with the Accutrigger that shows promise. ;yes;

Last time I shot, I shot a less than dime-sized group at 40 yds. prone with a bipod.  Used cheap Win. ammo to boot!  I'm happy so far.

Yeap. Cameron shot his yesterday evening and is now ready to take the tree rat population down a notch or two. But I told him he can only shoot them in the head. Nickel to a bucket of crap says the turd out does me this year. He was shooting that lil 22 pretty darn good yesterday.

Squirrels around here live in holes in the ground, not trees sadly.    Fun to shoot anyway and you don't have to worry about skylined shots.   Have a safe full of modern rifles and specialty pistols for predator and varmint hunting.   But about 4-5 years ago I went back to using traditional muzzle loaders for them.   Two of my favorites are a 36 Hawken and a 32 Cherokee.   The long brass 4X scope on the 36 and peeps on the 32 are for old eyes, but its surprizing how far they will reliably take predators and varmints.   Naturally you also have to dress period correct, leave the camo at home, and only use home made hand calls.

woodlots fence rows 12ga. with #6 or 5 shot, in the mountains 22 hornet in a ruger 722; i know its over kill but i sit and take headshots only. yes i eat squirrel and the hornet isnt so bad with head shots, it also is good practice for the medium size stuff.

Ladobe,
Nice looking rifles.  I have a 36 cal. that I made for a high school social studies project.  Made of parts and pieces from all over, but it used to work for squirrels.  The accessories look pretty good.  What is the map on the horn of?  I always thought that it was a pretty neat way to keep track of where things were - sort of an old GPS unit.

Jim,
Head shots only, unless you are one of the people that think that the head is the best eating.

Stu/Jerry -

Thanks.   All the possibles are home made (horse blanket case, powder horn, neck and bowie knives, deer/buffalo bag and the calls).   The powder horn is one of two map horns I made early in my reenactment days with the Rocky Mountain Mountainmen (1970's) and has a period correct map of all the Utah/Wyoming rondezvous sites on it, among other foofarraw.   The antler call is also scrimed and mapped with one of my favorite predator hunting areas in the mid 60's.   Picture (aviitar) is from a Woods Walk (ML match) near here a few years ago.

Jim -

Head shots as suggested, or you can "bark" them with even 45, 50, 54 or large caliber ML's.   It really doesn't matter though.   While the MM ate ground diggers in a pinch, I've tried them a few times and eating them compared to tree rats is about like eating jack rabbits compared to cottontails.     You could survive on them... but.   Besides, the 32 with a PRB is only about equal to a 22LR that can be loaded up to a 22MAG with maxi balls ---- the 36 starts out about as a 22MAG with PRB and can be loaded up from there to handle coyotes cleanly with a PRB or bigger game with maxi's.   So neither routinely blow "meeces to pieces".

I mostly use my 22 cal Marlin.Havent used my shotgun yet.For work I use a 70 something year old Crossman pelletgun to "remove"squirrels.I picked it up about 15 years ago at a flea market.I adapted a williams peep sight on it and its dead on! You guys got me wanting to go squirrel hunting now........... :eyebrownod:

As far as what gun........just whatever I feel like. Shotgun in whatever gauge or the 22 magnum or 22lr or I'm thinking about taking the AR..........wouldn't that be some good practice?  :laf:

I'm just kidding on the AR, that would be illegal in this state.

Kidding on the AR?

That is great practice.

I think that is legal here. I just can't shoot deer in the lower third of the state with a rifle.

I don't blame you Bop.

I'm quite sure the only thing that there is caliber restrictions on here is deer(shot gun or muzzle loader only, in the lower 1/3 of the state) and coyotes at nite(rifle, rimfire only and shotgun, no buckshot). Most every thing else is wide open.

I use a H&R Topper model 20 ga. It has a 3" chamber which is perfect for 3" nitro mag shells.I Know it sounds like overkill, But here in N E Arkansas the river bottom timber can be really tall. The gun is also light, easy to carry and kicks like a mule. Well two out of three aint bad.

Marlin 60, Ruger 10/22, Mossberg 500 12 gauge, H&R 12 gauge, 17 HMR Marlin 917, or a Savage mdl 12fv 22-250 or 223. The last 2 I use when I sit on the deck of the cabin, and the squirrels are 100+ on the edge of the woods.

I have used about every caliber of scattergun and .22 (short, LR, and mag). When the leaves are on and a .22 is not feesable, I find a single shot 410 makes things interesting. Any other time a 22LR or 22 Mag is what I use.

I think squirrel meat is the best wild game meat I have eaten so far. I have used my bow, .22 handgun, .22 rifle and my .17 HMR. The HMR is a little to loud so I'd like to get the .17 Mach 2. I have also tried my TC. Hawkin with the .32 barrel but I just can't get it to shoot for me. :madd: I did take one with the .50 barrel.

Have 3 of them, and 3 17HMR's for when the ranges get longer.    They do work well for squirrels, but it's still more fun and challenging with the small bore smokepoles.

in NH hardly anyone hunts squirrels, i do, grays and reds, i use a 410 o/u sometimes but generally like hunting them with a handgun, i use a s&w sixgun and have a ruger charger .22, really enjoy chasin the grays on a good fall day in the oak ridges, or along the conn. river. Also like geting after them on the ground with my long bow using judo or blunt tips.

Ill post a pic when i get it rigged up. the only bad thing i heard is they r tuff to take down n clean, but the ruger .22 pistols r legends around these here parts.

No once you learn how it is a piece of cake. I have had a MKII Target for almost 30 years. Lots of squirrels and target shooting even some rabbit hunting. Love that little gun.

Title: Super Comanche .410
Post by: nastygunz on August 09, 2008, 09:17:26 PM
Heres a target from the Super Comanche .410 single shot pistol at 17 yards ranged with 2 3/4 #6 shell. Not bad, I just picked up a box of 3 inch with 7 1/2 shot which should make for an even denser pattern, this will be my squirrel gun when they are in the trees.

Jimbo, i stuck it to the steering wheel of my subaru forester to take the pic if that gives you a size indication, im guessing 5 inches across?, and theres a pic of the gun on one of the pages of this thread , in fact i checked it is on page 5 of this thread.

That is a good question.  My guess would be a "mild" load.       Do I win the prize?  Oh, yea, it wasn't a contest.

Saw this little beefer at one of my spots, this is a good example of a safe head shot into a tree with a rimfire with the tree as backup:
