So any of you call guru's ever see or hear of Salt Cedar (Tamarisk)?

JohnP, you may have some out in your neck of the woods (or desert I suppose).

A fellow duck hunting fanatic from New Mexico sent me a box full of the stuff, and wow! It aint like any cedar I ever worked with before. Pretty neat stuff, but highly invasive unfortunately. I have a call or two headed back out his way I'll post them up for show and tell when I finish them.

Highly invasive is just the beginning.  If your walking through it with a rifle/shotgun you best wipe it down as soon as you can.  Mostly grows in the riparian areas around here not so much in the desert.
When they come for mine they better bring theirs

Whats it do to your lips?

Invasive Jim, not highly toxic. I doubt it would be able to penetrate the botox in your lips either way. I think John was referring to wiping your gun down if you walk through a patch of it. It's called salt cedar for a reason.

It actually emits salt into the surrounding soil and prevents anything else from being able to grow up around it. It kills off native species if its allowed to grow. From what I understand it's a big problem out that way. Sure makes some nice calls though...very hard/dense. It dulls the tools like no other wood I've turned.
