Title: My marlin 336 trapper project
Post by: bigben on August 18, 2019, 07:21:12 PM
So i picked this typical gunshop special 30/30 marlin 336. Nothing special. Nice bluing stained cheap wood stocks. It never shot well and i had never killed a deer with it.  I hunted with a 30/30 since the age of 12. I loved the caliber much like someone does their first car.  Typical of most lever guns it had a set of see through scope mounts so you could use both iron and scope.

A few years ago i wanted to modify this rifle into a trapper. Which is a short barreled version of a typical lever carbine. Most have barrels just over the legal limit. Mine has a length of 16 3/8”. I did a lot of research and read a lot of what others did.  The plan was to eliminate the barrel band around the muzzle end of the rifle and use a magazine stud similar to what the 1895 has on it. Then free float the mag tube. I put an 11deg crown on it. Lapped it and blued the barrel end. The only regret i had was waiting to do the project.

Any questions let me know

Me too.

Re pics, I am using Imgur.

My Dad had a Marlin 336A, long barrel rather than carbine.  It was the first center fire that I ever shot and I just loved it.  Someone stole it from him not long before he died.

I got to shoot this gun over a chrony the other day. I was getting an average of 2200fps which isnt to bad for the old thurty thurty. I have a bunch of reloading thats gonna have to happen soon and i was wondering. You hear how you should use solid copper to eliminate lead poisoning. What is your experience with copper only bullets?

My limited experience with mono bullets was in .30-06 with Hornady GMX, which are solid gilding metal I think rather than pure copper.  I found that they need to be seated off the lands more than I have been seating lead core bullets.  I started seating them almost touching the lands and got pressure signs very early in the work up, before I got halfway from starting powder charge to max.  I did not shoot the rest of the work up loads but did some asking around and then seated the bullets deeper, farther from the lands.  They need to get a little jump and get up some speed before engaging the lands and my faulty recall is that I moved them back 5 one thousandth from touching the lands.

Others somewhere will have more specifics but it is something to have in mind with mono bullets.

Never worried about lead poison and still don't.  I have a few friends who shoot copper in .223, 22-250 and .243 and have had no problems in killing everything from jacks to deer. If memory serves me right you probably are not going to shoot anything over 100 yards in PA so I wouldn't be concerned about 2200 fps out of a short barrel 30-30.
