My son took three of his nephews out yesterday and cold called for cougar on a mountainside where we have often found lion tracks and called a few in the past.  The batteries on his electronic call died 15 minutes into the set so he started hand calling.  A bit later all of them heard a single high clear whistle from the ridge above.  The kids thought that it was a bird but my son has heard many lions and was positive that it was a cougar.  He thought that the cat may have sneaked in on them or it may have just sat on the ridge and called down to say, "What's going on down there?"

No snow.  He's killed three called lions and has enough experience with them to know what he's talking about.  I could tell from his voice on the phone that he enjoyed the day.

An elk bugling and a lion whistle, two sounds, once heard, you will never forget.
When they come for mine they better bring theirs

That is classic-- poetic and powerful.

Wow, that's great.  I'm sure the boys have that sound burnt into their heads!
