One of my grandsons from Pennsylvania got his first knife recently while visiting us uncouth relatives way out west. His Mom wanted him to wait till his grampa could go pick out a knife with him.
We checked several stores and he bought a pocket knife with his own money at our best local sporting goods store. He was tempted by the weird colored, exotic shaped knives. I gave him the choice, but told him that knives with blades shaped like the Buck he bought were for practical use, designed by men who really used knives. He got a lock-back drop point with a good curve on the edge, an excellent pocket knife for skinning and gutting field work.
A couple of days after he bought it he used it to bone out a black bear shoulder. His older cousin shot a smallish bear, partly so his eastern cousin could get in on one. So he headed back to Pennsylvania with a blooded knife. Wonder if the boys in his grade school will believe him that he helped cut up a bear with his new knife. :laf:
Thats good reading. If they know the boy and anything about him they'll believe him lol.
My first pocket knife ended up down a fishing hole. It didn't go over very well.

He has already lost or misplaced his knife. I think he will find it but who knows. He thinks he left it in a pair of pants his Mom washed and had already packed for their trip home.
It is surprising in a way how well I remember lost knives: a Case from my Dad that I left under the car seat of a college friend who drove to Iowa and never came back; my favorite Buck from an Oklahoma cousin I left on a gravel bar in the Fraser River after gutting a salmon. Other knives I remember well but don't know what happened to them. Makes me feel bad about your knife you lost down the fishing hole.
Yeah as boys we all get knives, have our favorite ones, lose them, replace them etc. It's kind of like a boy and his dog. There's a place in our heart for our knives lol

Grandson found his knife, still clipped in the pocket of the jeans his mom washed. Rather than pack the boys' dirty clothes for their trip home, she had washed them and stuffed them in a duffle bag. Probably good for him to lose it for awhile and sweat out finding it.

Yes he is, he really is that old. LOL I don't remember the brand of my first one. I didn't have it very long before it fell down the ice fishing hole. But my second one was the schrade folding knife... uncle buck's?

Schrade and Old Timer are fine cutlery! Uncle Henrys also. In New Hampshire down at the state surplus property building you can go in there and buy state surplus property and once a year they have a huge auction and sell everything like confiscated motor vehicles from drug busts and all kinds of stuff.
One of the other things they have are all the knives confiscated from airports in New Hampshire by the TSA so they have hundreds of every kind of knife you can think of in boxes and you can usually buy them for one dollar apiece .

When she turned 10 she started to hunt deer with me I got her a

Worked great on two big deer and this year, she is 12 I got her a
6.5 Grendel and she will deer hunt, Antelope hunt, and if school activity permits elk too.
I help her with the blade change but she uses it very well.
