Title: Discount Antler Mount
Post by: FinsnFur on April 26, 2008, 12:55:30 PM
...hey that rhymed!  :yoyo:

Here's the scoop.
I want to do a step by step fully illustrated tutorial on how to do a home antler mount, for our site. But I keep forgetting to break out the camera and take the time to get pics of the process.

It costs ME roughly $40 bucks in material alone to do one of these. If someone out there has a rack laying around and is satisfied with the way I do these mounts (pictures below), I'll do yours for $25.00 and pay the shipping back to you, if you let me use yours for the tutorial.

Why?
I really want to put up a tutorial for this and I'm willing to eat some of the expense to cough up another rack since I'm not into deer hunting anymore.

I'm only doing one. So the first REGULAR member to respond with interest gets the deal.
Again your cost- $25.00 bucks complete as pictured below and shipped back.
I should add that as long as your content with either dark brown felt or a hunter green. Those are the two colors I have on hand. Any other color add $5.00, as I'll have to get that color then.

Whitetail rack only.

I like the forms you have on the mounts.  Do you make them or buy them.  We kind of make are forms out of styrofoam that we collect out of shipping cartons and then cover them with leather from deer we've had tanned

pitw, do you ever leave the hair on for your mounts? I'm not expert, but I'd say that'd look cool with hair on

No we have not let the hair on yet but like you we were talking about it the night we did these and think we'll try one this fall.  Will show you pics if it happens.  Only problem we could forsee was in the stetching of the hide to get it where you want it might make the hair on look a little bit goofy but time will tell.

Jim, I am concerned about shipping my horns........how they will be treated in shipping, how to ship them that kind of thing.
I have one set in my building right now that I skinned out and just let nature take its course on the rest. (still stinks some, whole head)
how would I prep them for you? how would I package them? I would not want to send it as is or anything :puke:
What is that covering?

LordAl...I can hold out until May for you if your seriously interested and willing. Otherwise let me know, and we'll move to the next one

pitw, those skull forms I buy. I have done a couple like you have pictured, infact years ago that's how I was taught to do them myself. If your making your own buckskin, etc...they DO have some sentimental value
I switched to the skull forms about 5 -6 years ago. I think they look pretty unique. They are also molded in a way that you simply cannot really screw up aligning the antlers.
That's why I'd really like to do this tutorial.

Al, The best way to ship them would be in a box that was obviously bigger then the rack, and then place a cut piece of styrofoam on each side of the rack, the same size as that particular wall on the box. Then fill in the rest with wadded up newspaper.
Same way it'd be shipped back.
The cover is raw felt. (pictured below)

...Whitetail rack only.

Going to play the race card huh?   :rolleye:

...

The only racks I've bagged the last few years were all two point (a big one on each side), and they've all already been mounted.   :innocentwhistle:

The race card?  :laf:
Well actually the technique would work on any rack as you know Ladobe. But since I'm eating half the expense to do this, why offer up a New Mexico Bull Elk rack.

Ok....LordAl it is. :yoyo:

:laf: I'm still working on it. I couldn't get bacK out there to finish it the other day, had the girls this weekend, and had web clients keeping me busy in between.

You'll probably have the mount back before you see the tutorial. It's going to take some time for me to compose everything and get it ready.

I was wondering if she got there and if it was gonna in one piece.  :wo:

My son was helping me wrap it up and he says, "geez Dad all your gonna do is make him mad." But I didnt want to risk it being trashed in anyway and I know how the USPS can be.

I'm glad she made it safe and sound. And I appreciate the opportunity.
