Shoot!! It opens the door on my wood stove! I didn't even recognize it until you said that. But mine don't have that point on one end. What's that part of it for?

Not only does it open the door, it is is used to shake the grate holding ash and embers. The pointed end is used to break apart pieces that were not completely burned, making it easier to clean the grate.
