I make 90% of my own spinners cause I hate the ones they sell and what they charge for them. Recently I bought a skirt tool and have been making my own silicone skirts too now.
And of course next I've been noticing how much plastic bait I throw out after a few fish because it gets ripped etc. Trailers, Senkos, topwater frogs, crawlers, etc. I hate throwing them out but they really are no good after a few rips cause you cant hook em anymore. They pile up in the back of my truck cause I cant throw em out :doh2: My favorite frog is literally $1 each. A pack of 5 is $5 bucks! Two fish and the things is so ripped up it looks like a crime scene.
I just found out that you can remelt a lot of those and re-pour them. :thumb2:
I'd like to pour some topwater water frogs but that means open molds and a flat frog. Not my style. So I looked at some two piece molds/dies...and I'm excited. I wonder if I could find someone to make a two piece aluminum mold of my favorite frog :wo: of course it'd have to be kept a secret or there would be probably copyright or patent infringements. :innocentwhistle:
I did see some two piece molds that come close to what I want. Has anyone here done this before? I'm seriously pursuing it. It HAS GOT to be cheaper in the long run.
Bondo!

That looks pretty damn professional, can't wait to see what you pour out of it!
Looks like Jim's Frogs will be hitting the water pretty soon. When you get them perfected let us know how much you are selling them for.

Won't all the staffers get free ones?
You need to engrave something on the inside of that mold to customize your frogs. :yoyo:
Jerry knows where this is headed lmao [emoji23]🤣 itll end up costing me 8 bucks to make the 1 dollar frog I was whining about. lol

In the off-season from fishing you can use that mold to make chocolate frogs for the holidays :innocentwhistle: :innocentwhistle:
I'm sure that mold isn't just sitting in the corner. Let's see how well they're turning out! :corn:
LMAO! :laf: I dont have my injector yet Dave. Apparently being shipped from Ukraine :iroll: It's gonna be a long wait. I might try nastys idea and make some chocolate frogs while I wait :laf:
I bet the grandbaby would like to bust up some chocolate frogs!
Well, while I patiently wait for my injector I've been trying to decide if I want to use a microwave or a hot plate to melt the plastic. I've heard mixed reviews on both. I decided to go with the hot plate and pick a cheapie $20 Oster at Shopko tonight.
Did my first test run of melting old, used torn plastics. It's a lot faster than then folks said it would be with the hot plate and I felt like I controlled the temperature fairly easy.
So far I'm pretty impressed.

Looks like you got the right color for a sand frog.
Cool!
Interesting Jimbo!! :wo:
Nice
Let me know when you're taking orders!
Finally got an injector and made some test shots tonight.
The company I got my plastisol from (Bait Junkies) sold me a sample pack, which consisted of three 4-ounce bottles of each of their viscosities. Soft, medium and hard.
I wanted to mold a frog out of each one so that I knew which one I like the best. Things went quite well. I'm very impressed so far.
Im going to need another measuring cup which is what I heat the plastisol in, on the hot plate. For some reason the bait releases from the mold within minutes of being injected. But it stays so hot in that measuring cup for so long that I can't get it out to start another batch. When it cools it just peels right out of the cup. But it's holding it's temperature and smearing and sticking in the cup for too long.
The straight plastisol is like milk white in the container. When you heat it to 350 degrees it turns crystal clear. I didn't waste any coloring in these samples so they're all clear frogs.

If'n you don't make a red one to raffle off, you will be wasting an opportunity. :eyebrow:
Thats pretty dang cool, so u can add color n scent and such!
Barry!...thats a heckuva idea :alscalls: It never dawned on me. I'm doing it :laf:
Yah Nasty, you can add glitter, scent, color, whatever you want. I seen a video the other day that showed a guy hand pouring a little white tinted plastisol in the bottom half of a frog mold and let it set up. Then he put the two halves together and injected his regular color. The results...A frog with a white belly. :sneer:
Nottttt the RedFroggggggggggg :innocentwhistle:... I wonder if you melted some powerbait worms into your frog if the Scent n taste would still show up?
That's awesome!!!!! And kinda cool too.
It will nasty. When I did the practice meltdown with old torn plastics, some of those in the cup were power baits.
It kept the aroma and passed it into the new plastic but it wasn't as strong. I don't know that that was from recooking it though. I think it was more from the baits were already well used and washed sorta speak. Because they do begin lose that scent just from being used a lot.

When should i put my order in😇😉💰💰💰💰
Orders need to be placed by midnight 7/31 to receive the early bird free shipping. lol
Well this should conclude the testing and trial runs.
I injected one with the soft plastisol, the medium plastisol and one with hard.
After doing the soft and medium first and realizing how soft they were I decided to add some white to the last one when I used the hard plastisol knowing that that was going to be the go to.
The soft was so soft it felt like you were holding somebody's inards but it was dry. The medium would work good for twister tails or trailers or flukes. But for the Frog I think the hard was the best.
An original factory frog is on right.

Looks good Jim!
I wonder if you could blend up some shade and add it to the pour, then keep it cold till used.
If so that would be cool.
Sent from my Tank Xtreme 5.0 using Tapatalk
I dont know why not Dan. Nothings really activated until it hits 350 degrees anyway, 300 on remelts. So storing solutions shouldnt be a problem. The problem would be with the fact that the plastisol uncooked is milk white. And it takes approx 1 drop of colorant per ounce to get brilliant shiny colors. It will be farrrr from what you think its going to be when mixing it up at this point, uncooked.
So you would have to make a couple test runs to get a non typical shade, and write down each recipe so that you knew what it took once it revealed itself after you cook it down and shoot it.
Almost forgot, the results are in and the outlook is positive.
I ripped this little bucket mouth from the moss last Saturday afternoon.
It was a pretty tough weekend for fishing. Actually it was the only fish I caught all weekend but it WAS one of my homemade frogs that got er done.
First test, good results. Next! [emoji41]

Just catching up with this thread - very cool, and can't argue with the results. You need to add some color to something, though. Everything's white right up to your new ride! :laf:
Glad to see that the frog has passed the test and will now be appearing in stores everywhere.

I think that this is one of those projects where you have to spend money so you can enjoy what you spent your money on. Right Jim?
Jerry
It is kind of like fly tying, pretty cool to catch something on something you made.
:laf: Jerry nailed it. This is one of those projects where you have to spend money so you can enjoy what you spent your money on.
No logo Slag
Bummer on the logo.
But I do love the fact of catching on what you made with your own hands.
I use the ribbit brand of frogs and have had enough luck with them that I bought several packs of them. Until I saw this thread I had no idea you could make your own. Do yours hold up as well as the store bought?
I havent used them enough yet to tell Slag. You can make soft ones which tear easy but flop a lot, or tough ones which last a long time but are stiffer. There's three types of plastic. Soft, medium and hard. Which hook do you use? Thats a lot of what really determines how long they last.

Thats a helluva good price Nasty. Those aluminum molds are expensive. I bet his aluminum molds alone are worth close to $400. The stone ones on the end are real inexpensive.
Too bad He dont have I feel like I need.
I do like the double barrel injector. You can mix colors are fill two molds. :eyebrow:
Looks like he gave up on his pouring.
Yah he must have.
As soon as it gets warm enough around here I'll be back out there injecting molds
Cant cook that stuff in the house or I'd be doin it now. :eyebrow:
Grape with black flake.
Licorice scented.
Sure wish we would quit flooding out so I can use some of the baits I've been molding. I'm gonna get over run with plastic baits lol

Waiting on some more molds. Coming from the Ukraine :iroll:
Tracking says they went through NYC on the 17th. Geez that was over a week ago.
Maybe they are delivering them on a bicycle :innocentwhistle:
The NSA probably waylaid them and is going over them with a fine tooth comb wondering why you're getting shipments from the Ukraine :innocentwhistle:
Thats not funny Nasty. Something is fishy.
See what I did there?
I saw :alscalls:
If you get overrun, just send the extras down this way. I will take care of them for you.
