Title: Tenkara!
Post by: nastygunz on July 15, 2019, 06:29:39 PM
Any of you young guns use a tenkara flyrod? My favorite rod to use when I am fishing the little brooks for native brook trout. Simple, easy, cheap, takes me back to being a kid and fishing those same brooks with a willow branch and 4 feet of line and hook, split shot and worm :yoyo:

They aren't too cheap.  $149.00 was the least expensive one on their website. https://www.tenkararodco.com/collections/frontpage

I paid $4.00 for mine on Amazon, used some old fly line and tippet  and been catching fish on it for a while with no problems.  There are quite a few videos on YouTube of guys using them on the cheap with good success.  This guy has a great article on  how he did a $10  tenkara rod:

I think GOOD fly rods are expensive anyway arent they? Or are they all?
If I spend that much coin on a rod, it better say Johnny Morris on it. :alscalls:

All that marketing is designed to catch the fishermen not the fish!🐟🐟🐟🐟.  When it comes to guns and fishing poles and many other things I don't think more expensive always means better.

Expensive = bragging rights

But only on there equipment. Just cause you spent BooCoo money doesn't mean you can use it to its fullest potential.

Yah more expensive doesn't always mean better, I agree. But on the same note, I've never spent $25 bucks for a Walmart rod and and had it outlast or perform like a Bass Pro Shops or Johnny Morris.
Thay all catch fish....might as well get that out right now. But I personally use different rods for different types of lures and different types of fishing conditions. I want a medium action but a fast tip in open water or stump fishing. And I want a heavy action slow tip for top water frogs in the pads. You pay more for rods built that way.

Most of the time...a Walmart $25 rod is a general purpose, one size fits all, universal, you have no idea what your doing so go ahead and slam the trunk lid shut on me, disposable, fiberglass stick.  :alscalls:

Fiberglass fly rods have made a huge come back  in the last few years. A lot of the major places stock them now.  I also own about 15 fishing poles for different situations.  From a 6 foot two weight fly rod to a 10 foot surf caster.  I also use fiscal common sense and don't think most people need $150 tenkara to catch Brooke trout and bluegill with,  although the companies want you to think you have to have that to succeed. 💰💰💰💰💰💰🐟🐟🐟🐟

Yes!  Some of the prices on air guns are absolutely ridiculous.

Speaking of low cost tenkara:  I did my earliest fishing with a cane pole and fixed line the length of the pole.  Caught a LOT of rainbow trout and bullhead catfish and some bass in lakes on that rig.  My best rainbow was 23 inches on that rig.

In my teens and ever since till now, when I fish small creeks for trout, especially tight brushy tangled forest cover creeks, I prefer a long fly rod.  The plan is to NEVER cast, but to dap a fly or a hook with a worm into pockets, reel to the tip and poke under brush, down into holes and then let out a smidge of line and let the current take it a foot or a few under a log jam, etc.  I have much more control that way than with a short rod that requires casting.  I tend to hand pull in line or let it out without using the reel, rarely more line out than the length of the rod.  Sounds like tenkara to me...

Small trout are fun that way and I have one creek in my resume where we used to fish spawners 24 inches and more by that method.

"The plan is to NEVER cast, but to dap a fly"

That is exactly what I do when fishing the small Brooks for native brook trout. Most of the time nothing touches the water but the fly itself. I absolutely slay them with a white Miller Dry fly that looks like one of those little white  moths you always see fluttering about. Those fish are super spooky too so the long rod keeps you away from the water also!
