Title: Air skinning a coyote
Post by: HaMeR on October 29, 2011, 05:29:15 AM
Has anybody ever done this? If so what are the next cuts you make to get the hide off without cutting it down the gut.

I've never done it personally, but I would imagine you could strip his pajamas off anyway you wanted to once you got that far.
Typically a cut down the inside of each leg to the anus as with anything and then roll the hide down off him. Called Tube skinning.

But you could still cut down the middle of his belly and not hurt anything, the skin is already separated....or it appeared to be.

Having never done anything like that I thought maybe that was the way to do it. And now I also know some new terminology,, tube skinning. Which sounds like something Bopeye does to a Twinkie pack.  :innocentwhistle:  At any rate Thanks. I'm hoping to get a coyote in my sights again & try this method. I think tanned coyote hides are cool & we have quite a few coon around here that can be practiced on as well. What tanning solution(s) do you recommend for beginners like myself & my Brother??

Kinda funny to watch too. Looks like the bloating process of a carcass on high speed film.  :alscalls: :alscalls:

In some cases using air just might be the trick but I'm afraid it would take way too much Fix-a-Flat to plug up the holes that I create.  :laf:

Years ago my grandfather put up fur, I've skinned out a lot of animals but only one coyote... my first and my last.  :puke:

Wow thats crazy, Ive never seen anybody do that before.  I have put up alot of fur myself and coons would have to be what I hate the most.  My BIL wanted to be a trapper so I made him flesh 3 coons back to back.  He changed his mind lol.

I was going to recommend the Rittel's EZ100 HaMeR. But apparently I've been out of the business long enough for a few others to drop out also.

I discovered when trying to fetch ya some links that Rittels is no longer in business. And McKenzie has bought out VanDykes :holdon: holy crap.

Whatever you decide on, dont use a brush on tan like some of the creams and pastes they have. It's junk and not intended for finished furs. But what you use is not nearly as important as how you prep the hide.

I just remembered from seeing an old rerun...Mike and Bruce (swamp people) use the air skinning technique on their gators.
