Weird. Kinda makes me wonder if adverse weather or something ruined what WAS a better den and mother led them back when the dust settled.

It's been quite a few yrs now. A female had a single hole den in the middle of a large golf course in a large city. Groundskeeper invited me to come see it. Den entrance hole was around 14" high & maybe 4' deep, no exit. She had a few young pups inside. Other coyote dens I've seen had at least 1 exit hole.

I'm with Jim, that something really unusual is behind that pic of small coyote pups in the open.  I've never seen an above ground open coyote den, nor heard of one.

For several springs in a row coyotes used a den under the roots of a big down tree where I picked mushrooms.  That one had three entrances as I recall.  I never saw a coyote there, in the woods, but never tried and there was abundant fresh sign.  Another multi entrance one was in a water eroded cut on a ridge in sage brush desert.

Another coyote den I recall was a hole straight into the face of a steep hillside in the woods, a long way from any road.

I wondered that too but ya can see they is so small that they look blind yet.  The fur for the nest says they been in it for a bit.  Strange one for a fact.
Maybe the bitch has claustrophobia. :wo:

I've seen dens all over this area and they all were underground.  But I guess if a fella can see one swimming it's probable that the odd one does nest above ground.
