We have a 15'x16' dining room & one wall was relatively empty along the floor. So I decided one day to learn how to do mortise & tenon joinery & this is what I came up with. It is perfect for Diane's laptop & fills the empty space nicely. It is 58"x19"x30". The legs, stretchers & aprons are nice pine & the top is Hickory with a 2" Red Oak band around it. The entire table is stained with a walnut gel stain & 3 coats of satin poly over top with 2 coats of Turtle Wax hand buffed over that. This makes it easier for Diane to dust.   :laf:

This was 2 years ago. Now fast forward to last week & I hear,, "My Mom & Dad's anniversary is in August. Can you make another table like my laptop table for them?" I said "Sure can. Lets go pick out some wood".   So off we go. We looked at the 1/4 sawn white oak & the curly maple. I wanted to use them both but couldn't decide on a way to incorporate them into 1 project & make it look nice. So I went back today & low & behold I found some 1/4 sawn curly white oak!! So out the door it goes with me!!

I hope I can do this wood the justice it so richly deserves. Wish me luck!!

Now that is some fine looking oak! Just take your time and study the grain some and it will come out just fine. My inlaws were always tickled with whatever I built or carved for them no matter what it was. We lost my FIL June 13'th.

I just got my hands on some reclaimed oak myself. A whole utilty trailer full of 2X6's . I am pretty sure they are white oak from th lack of worm holes in them but I won't really know until I remill it.  Got lots of plans for these. Gliders , porch swings, and the better stuff will make some side tables.

Have fun with your project. Jimmie

Nice job. To buy a piece of furniture like that would run some pretty big bucks

Thanks for all the compliments & votes of confidence guys!! I'll post up some pics when it's all done.

Jimmie-- I hope that is white oak. As you well know it makes great outdoor furniture. I hope that stuff is loaded with rays & flecks too.

Troy-- Will do!! If that top splits I won't be happy. I like to use wooden clips with oblong holes drilled for movement.

Bill-- I just got lucky this AM is all. I swear that wood was not there when we were out there on Wednesday!!

Jerry-- I sure will. I really enjoy doing this stuff & if I was any good at it I would do it for a living.

Jim-- This stuff ran me $7.70 bd/ft. But if I do my part it will be very nice & worth 3x that.   If I were to sell it that is.  :innocentwhistle:   :laf: :laf:

1 month & 3 days later I will be delivering the table to my In-Laws. It goes out tomorrow AM for their 44th Anniversary.

I used a Red Chestnut stain with 2 coats of Spar Urethane & 2 coats of paste wax hand buffed. I really like the Spar Urethane enough to use it again. Hope you enjoy my little project & I hope it goes over well tomorrow. Wish me Luck!!  :yoyo:

Good night all!! A week of 3:30AM's has me whooped.

Very well done HaMer,The wood is beautiful and the saw cuts gives it a rustic touch and the fact that its hand made by you will make it priceless to the in-laws.  You would have no problems selling items like that probably could not make them fast enought.  :yoyo: cc

Joe,Chad,Jim,CC-- Thanks guys!! I couldn't believe that wood when I seen it!! I even went back & got what I had left behind.  :eyebrow: God & Mother Nature had more to do with the looks of this table than I did. They get all the credit.  I was just the one lucky enough to find it & have a good use for it. I think the Red Chestnut stain was the topper too. I have even thought about making these tables & selling them. I still have a few small things to work out on them tho. On the other hand it might take the fun out of making them too. The glue lines are all visible but the one is definitely more noticeable. That is the one in the back. Over all I'm happy with this project & it will come back home someday. Diane wants it back when her Parents are gone & I hope that won't be for a long long time.

Now that turned out really nice Hammer. It tickles me to think that CC believes those are saw marks. Those rays are fantastic in that oak. I use spar urethane on a lot pf projects myself. I also use the water based stains and poly's too. I like them both real well.

We have a solid twenty four inch by two inch spanish cedar board where I work that no one has the heart to cut into yet. It's sixteen feet long it would make a darned nice table top. Jimmie

That's a GREAT looking table Glen. You've built another family heirloom. :yoyo:
