Got her three weeks ago from the shelter. Estimated age is 18 - 24 months. Had no intention of getting a hunting dog as I do very little hunting anymore. Went to the shelter to find a bigger dog than the one we have, when I walked past her pen she went crazy, barking and jumping, the lady at the shelter said all she does is lay there never acted like this before. So we took her home. We have had her for three weeks, already she has learned to walk at heel, sits and comes on command. She will not leave my side, should have named her velcro or shadow! Marge thinks she will be my incentive to get out and hunt more. Hope she is right!

Beauty!
Great looking lab! She'll get you motivated!
That's cool Mr. John!! You have a fine looking & VERY loyal pup!! Not sure which one of you are the luckiest!! :yoyo: :yoyo:
good looking dog you have there Mr John.
Beautiful dog .
Labs are the BEST IMO
Hopefully she is past the chewing stage tho
"should have named her velcro or shadow" I love that line. I guess that Darcy knows quality when he walks by her cage.
Jerry
fine looking pooch John... hope you get her out to hunt some this fall...
Labs " I love Them " They are so Loyal and loving, I still miss mine badly, She picked you out " that's Cool " When I went to buy my lab she was one of 9 Pups and all of them survived, The Breeder got all of them out to let me chose one , Well I did not have to chose , she chose me and what a joy she was, just wanted to be with me where ever I went, so easy to train and I felt like she could read my mind, For sure you have a life long friend. :congrats: :highclap: cc
Shes perfect! :congrats:
Welcome to the board Darcy
Most of y'all know my many post about our Dobie Zeke. Nothing can replace him or measure up to him but Darcy sure is trying hard. She is a self learner, beside the basic commands she has taught herself to dig up a $2,000 irrigations system (twice), Plow the garden, already plowed and planted, open drawers in the kitchen and eat whatever is there, and lick the butter plate clean. We thought about enrolling her in an obedience class but figured out there is nothing they could teach her, she knows it all, just like any teenager knows it all.

How can ya get mad with a face like that.
sounds like she may still have some of those puppy shenanigans in her... hopefully you'll be able to wean her from any undesirable activities before to long...
John,
It does look like you have a smart one there. Now you just have to be smarter.
Jerry
She knows everything lol :laf:

:alscalls: That ain't no way to talk about a mans dog :readthis:
Shoot! she didnt see that did she Brad? :doh2:
has she had chance to meet any of the quail yet?... wondering how she'd handle birds, a pointer or a flusher... if she'll point and hold it, you may have to take the 28 for a walk this fall...
She better not point them, if she does she'll get broke of that in a hurry. She is a LABRADOR RETRIEVER not a labrador pointer! Hopefully I'll get a pigeon or two for her to find and retrieve before dove season gets here.
However she is in big time serious trouble with Marge. She got to the Zebra skin and chewed one of the hind legs off. Don't know how I'm going to bail her out of this dilemma, sure it's going to cost me big $$$$$.
hey nothing wrong with a retriever pointing, just so they'll retrieve after the shot...
oh my the zebra skin, I know Marge is livid over that... I could tell she was attached to that when we were talking about it last spring...
We dont have to take a trip to Africa do we?
Gas up the jet Jim!! We be headin outta here for a few!!!!!!!!!!! :yoyo: :yoyo:
:alscalls: :alscalls:
Let me clear up a few things:
Dale, if I wanted a pointer I would have got a pointer, not a retriever. Have I made myself perfectly clear........... :madd:
Jim, I did show your comment to her. She let me know that she knows a few Dobermans and Rottweilers in Wisconsin and she will be in contact with them. :eyebrow:
Glen, I know I'm not in the flight path but you could detour and pick me up, but leave Jim home to fend off the Doberman and Rottweiler.
Brad, thank you, some people just don't know better.
Nice looking dog for a fact. I kinda/sorta get a kick outta how you guys actually use them for something besides kicking. :innocentwhistle:
I better pick up some bacon and scooby snacks :sad3:
MR. John, Reading the things that Darcy has learned so far brought back a lot of memories of my Lab named Puddin, Where I lived when I got her we had probably 100 Azaleas planted in the back yard and she dug all of them up, chewed the wiring on my Table saw up, chewed a big gash out of the back door that I had to replace, chewed up two 75 feet long garden hose into 1 foot pieces. When we moved to where we live now I had put lights down the driveway but had the wiring lay next to the house in a roll but it was hooked up to the switch in the house after several days of going out and she had been chewing on it to make little pieces out of it I decided to flip the switch to ON that night , apparently she got all of the wiring she wanted and from that day on she never chew up anything not even the water hose. I still miss her as she was so loyal and wanted to be with me everywhere I went, I sure loved that dog and wish she was still here. cc
sorry John, didn't mean to get your hackles all twisted up... :bowingsmilie: was just thinking more on the line of a European versatile dog that would do it all... I'll say no more on the matter... :nofgr:
Then we'll just have to take the scenic route to Africa Mr. John!!
Best of luck up there Jim!! We'll be laughing :doh2: thinking about you!! :eyebrownod: :eyebrownod:
Darcy no longer resides with us. She was a terrific retriever and loved to hunt. If I even looked at the gun safe she headed for the truck. As I could no longer walk and her great desire to hunt I started to look for someone who would hunt her. After an extensive search we found a young family who we thought would fit. The problem was they lived three-hundred miles away, that was the test, if they are willing to drive six hundred miles round trip maybe they are the right ones. We talked to them several times and they said "yes we would be willing to drive down to see her, knowing we might not make a match." After they hung up I told Marge they will not be down. I'll be damn the following day at about 8AM they rang the doorbell, he - she and two little girls. They immediately took to Darcy and she to them. The two kids and Darcy rolled on the floor, knocked over furniture, jumped on the sofa and just had a good time. Needless to say after we fed them all breakfast they departed with Darcy. When last years dove season started he sent me pictures of her hunting for birds he had knocked down and them bringing them back. During last quail season he sent he a couple of videos of her retrieving some downed quail. He has also sent pictures of her sacked out at night in bed with his two little girls. So I'm sure I did the right thing by her and she got a good home.
GREAT story! Hard to imagine giving up such a dog, all the more moving and compelling because it is the right thing to do. Doggone this getting old is a hassle and getting ready to die well is a lot of work.
Boy that was heading in a direction unlike it ended.
Glad they worked out. It had to be tough for you and Marge
