The rules are changing on July 13 for purchasers of suppressors through NFA trusts.
So I started looking at buying a suppressor (again, I've done this before). I procrastinate a lot it seems. Anyways, I found this video on "How to purchase a silencer" for those who may be interested in the process.

Even if you don't want a suppressor, watch the link.
I have often thought of getting one and even have a couple of firearms that are already threaded. But then I think of what I could do with the $400 to get the legal paperwork (trust) done so when I am gone it won't be a problem and then the $300 to the Feds and I think I can probably live without one.

The trust can be set up for $130 at:

The BATF tax stamp is $200.
Hum,
$330 sounds way better.

Here is another DIY provider. I'm not a lawyer but it appears to be a bit more comprehensive and has lots of good reviews online.

It may work but given the fact that making an illegal suppressor carries a penalty up to a $250,000 fine and 10 years in a federal penitentiary, I wouldn't recommend it. :nono:
Yah that prolly aint a good idear

Guys, I bought a YHM suppressor for my AR a couple years ago. I just took the NFA paperwork to my county sheriffs office, same place where I renew my ccw permit, and they OKed me for the suppressor. Sent in the paperwork and got the suppressor. Been using it to coyote hunt for a couple of years now!! I just recently did the same for a .22 rimfire suppressor. Silencerco Sparrow. My dealer has the can in his safe, I'm just waiting for the paperwork to come back from ATF. It's not hard, just time consuming.

Did you use a trust or file the paperwork as an individual?
Filed as an individual. So easy. Class 3 dealer orders the can. When it comes in you need to include the serial number on the paperwork. Just fill out two sets of the paperwork, which my class 3 dealer helped me with, include a passport photo and fingerprints and have them OKed by the sheriff. Once he signs off on the paperwork then you send them in to ATF and the wait begins. I guess I just don't understand the need for a trust??

I am not a lawyer nor have I done this, but it is my belief that problems can arise with what happens to the suppressor when you die. If it is in a trust it will automatically pass as per the wording in the trust.

I did find this:
The top reasons so many people use a Gun Trusts are:
A Gun Trust allows multiple people to legally have possession of the suppressor (or other NFA item)
A Gun Trust provides flexibility by allowing you to add and/or remove trustees at any time - which provides a lot of flexibility
Registering using a Gun Trust or Corporation is typically faster than registering as an individual
When you use a Gun Trust you will NOT need a CLEO signature or fingerprints

That was true up until July 13, 2016. After that date photos and fingerprints are needed but the CLEO only has to be notified. He cannot refuse an application as was the case prior to July 13.
