Title: Considering buying a Kimber 1911 in 45acp
Post by: FinsnFur on July 05, 2019, 08:03:54 PM
Why...
I've been wanting a 45 for quite some time.
I like the 1911 pistols.
And I feel like Kimber might be the best choice. Based on nothing more then what I've read. Not too mention their pistols just seem to stand out from the rest.
Any suggestions, experiences, or otherwise?

I prefer Colt 1911s, but there's a lot of nice 1911s out there. You can get info on specific brands here:

I really liked the looks and feel of the Kimber, but there were some reviews about some of the new plastic internal parts not holding up.  If I ever come across an old model (but I don't know how old it would need to be) it might find a home in my safe.  In the meantime I have a Colt 1911 that I have never fired but have fired quite a few, and a Glock that I really like.  The Glock is the SF (small frame) model that most refer to as Still Fat.  It is somewhat big, but there is very little recoil compared to the other .45 ACP's that I have fired.  Go hold some and shoot some and then decide.

P.S. Any of them will kill a snake.

Are you sure Jerry? Are you sure they'll kill a snake? [emoji21]

I do want to visit Cabela's and the local gun shops and hold a few. Maybe I'll find something that will change my mind.

Well, I haven't exactly tried it in a kayak, but a well-placed shot to the head should put one down.

Edit: I was just saying that because I saw a video of one crawling on a kayak.   :innocentwhistle:

Jim - I have a Sig 1911 and really like it.  Have had no malfunctions and have test fired numerous brands of ammo.  It was like my credit card "never leave home without it"  As I get older and my physical condition worsens it now resides on the nightstand.  However I have another Sig in .380 that has become my carry gun.  Both have proven very effective on snakes.

I don't own a 1911 but really want one, I've come close a few times but never pulled the trigger!
I do own a Springfield XD 45 and it's a shooter.
Watching this post closely it has my attention again.

Jim - I have a Sig 1911 and really like it.

I really like that John. I seen a couple of those today and they are definitely sharp looking. :eyebrow:

I did some road tripping this morning. The weather sucked, and the rivers a mess again. So I visited every gun dealer within reasonable driving distance and fondled their 1911's. Two of them didnt even carry such a thing
I took pics of the guns as I went along and when I ran out of places to visit 3 hours later, I sat in the truck scrolling through the pics...and decided to wait. I went back home.

I held several Remingtons, who is offering $75.00 rebate till the end of the month. 1 Commander, 3 Kimbers, and 1 Springfield (which was pretty sharp but the 4 inch barrel made it look like anything except a 1911). Seen lots of Sigs but for some reason never even held one.

Once home, I got back on the internet and dug around some more. Unwilling to admit I was trying to find some more that would talk me into a Remington instead of the Kimbers I been coveting  :laf:

I think you could find anything on any gun manufacturer if you looked. lol It's like the Ford vs Chevy saga.
I did find an article that said Kimbers dont depreciate trade in value like Remington does, but again that was one persons opinion.

I started to eat some late lunch, made a sandwich and pondered the whole thing.
I decided, ya know what? I've wanted it for so long and keep putting it off. Cabala's literally has one of the models I've been drooling over. I'm just going to go get it and quit hee hawing around. Done and done.

I backed out of the driveway still eating that sandwich :alscalls:

I'll post a pic with the phone via tapatalk...it'll be easier.

I didn't realize that the DOJ did away with the 3-day cool off period.
I was shocked when he said he'd carry it to the door for me cuz I'm not allowed to take it through the store.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190707/42fd23185adb28792714edc93051dc34.jpg)

Congratulations on the Kimber.  Looks like a great addition to your 'family' of firearms. Start practicing so that the next snake that crawls across (or maybe is living  :innocentwhistle: ) in your kayak will be taken care of.

I love the 1911, always have from my military days, best looking handgun IMHO. I am also overly fond of a good revolver. But for ease of care, use, adaptability, etc, I love my Glock 17! My first and only polymer pistol. Basically maintenance free and can put out massive fast firepower and pretty damn accurate also. I find other then my S&W .38 snubbie its my favorite carry gun,and out in the field its usually my numba 1 carry gun. I could not fully adapt from the 1911 though and had a 1911 style thumb safety put on the Glock, now I call it the Glock 1911😇👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

"I love my Glock 17!"  Glocks are for women, 1911 are for men.

I waited about 20 years to get one, never figured a plastic pistol would work, theres a reason police and military went polymer  Rock your Glock! Might I add the Glock 10mm is one of the hottest hunting handguns around.

In a word, yes. The full power 10mm exceeds the 45 ACP by quite a bit.

You can convert some 45 ACP chambered handguns to 45 Super. That's a whole new power level in a 45 ACP pistol. I converted my Colt Competition to fire 45 Super. However, I still like the 10mm in my Colt Delta Elite.

:alscalls: :alscalls: Not many ladies where I fish

No I doubt the Kimber will ever see the river or the kayak. Thats just a risk I'm not willing to take :nono:
I did take it out and briefly shoot it a few times the other day. VERY BRIEFLY cause I was in the woods and the mosquitoes were horrible. Shot a couple clips at some expired vegetable cans and got the heck out of there.
I love the smooth crisp trigger and the way she barks :thumb2:
Insanely accurate too. Love this thing so far. So glad I finally got one.

I have heard that the mosquitoes are large enough up there to be used as targets - just saying.

Now I have a vision of a man standing in the woods shooting at things that a person a reasonable distance away can't see.  I can hear it now, "Remember watching that crazy guy shooting at ghosts?"

I've always had a soft spot for 1911's.   Here is a pic of my Colt pre-series 70 that I bought from a Marine PX over 50 years ago.   The bottom Colt 1911 is my son's West Point pistol.

I'm trying to figure out how high the last piece of tomato went.  :laf:
On the left side of the clip, about 2/3rd up, there's a horizontal leaf that catches the last chunk of tomato at the 17 second mark.
I feel like that baby was 20 feet in the air  :alscalls:
