Nice post. It sure makes it easy to see the difference.
Jerry
One easy way to tell the difference is to draw an outline around the track. When you outline a dog track,it will make an almost perfect circle. The coyote track will make a more oblong oval.
Yea, but I always forget to bring a pen with me.
Smartass,You been around Bopeye to long. :laf:

Pretty clever. :nono:
I don't don't have to deal with many dogs where I am. Actually none, but here's a good way to tell the difference. I use it mostly for coyotes.

Thanks for the info That helps a lot
I've seen the X routine before myself, slick little ID.
Hey Brad, could you label under each of those pics for the newbs skimming through the topic.
Done. I don't have a good close up cat pic. Maybe someone could put one of them up too. Their tracks have kind of a half circle thing going.
Brad
Very helpful. Thanks a lot!

I was always told and have noticed this.
To tell the difference between a dog and coyote track is the widths. Like the picture showing the front and rear foot on the coyote. The front is wider than the rear. A dog will not have the distinction. I think it has something to do with the front foot being bigger for swiping at the running game to knock it down during the chase.
or maybe I am thinking of elephants.
I don't worry alot whether its a dog or coyote most places I hunt if its a dog that comes in its as wild or worse than a coyote with the closest houses being many miles away dogs aren't very common
Stu,
That's a tough one. Kinda looks like whatever it is started to turn when it stepped down.
Brad

You'll have to upload the pics to the web before you can post them Dale. It looks like you tried to post that one right from your desktop.
Or you can attach the picture by clicking the attachment button below your post box.
Let me know if you have any trouble or if I just made it even more confusing.
Dogs or coyotes, their front paws are larger than the rear paws.
yes I figured that out after I tried posting it, went back and thought I took it out, but guess I didn't... lets try this one...
found this one in the yard one morning shortly after I moved to NC... I saw him late the night before coming home from town... there had been a bunch, maybe 12-15 stray cats around before that, but the most of them disappeared after this big boy moved in...

here's one I took up in Louisburg, where I do some deer hunting... this was taken the morning after a night of hard rain...

Speaking of coyote tracks. Largest coyote track I've ever found was 3.5" long. Found it last yr. Most around my area run 2.75-3" long on average.
