There's a groundhog in our yard.

My wife told me she saw a groundhog in our yard last week. I borrowed a live trap from a friend with the intention of catching and releasing the little trespasser. I set and baited the trap yesterday afternoon and began the long wait.

Late this morning I was standing in the kitchen and noticed movement in the back yard. There he was, large as life, browsing around my yard. He was only fifiteen yards or so from the trap and I thought I might get to see him go in and get caught. Then I thought about my crossbow. I had brought it up from the basement yesterday to shoot a few times in preparation for hunting this morning. The hunt got rained out, but the crossbow was still right there. So, I got my rangefinder, threaded a three bladed Rage onto a bolt and quietly opened the kitchen window and screen. Thirty-four yards, broadside. I cocked the crossbow, loaded the bolt, rested the bow on my trigger stick and put the thirty yard pin just a tad above where I wanted to hit him. Pulled the trigger and WHAM! down he went. He kicked a couple of times and layed there with his tail straight in the air. Then the tailed slowly lowered till it was on the ground and still.

There he lies just to the left of the fence.
 

Looks peaceful doesn't he?


Except for the damage done by the broadhead.


I no longer need the trap.

I would have been disappointed if I had missed, that thing is crazy accurate. From a good rest it will consistently shoot under an inch at thirty yards. Now if it were my compound bow, I would have been just as surprised as the groundhog if I had made the shot!

My friend says you have to parboil them first and then just throw em on the grill.  My wife says "you better not even think about it."  I went with what she said.

Mom used to dip the legs in milk & roll them in flour & corn meal. Let them set for a 1/2hr then fry em. Then they would go in the oven.     Aint no different than eating deer. 


And if you say you will just stick with chicken remember this. They eat with their pecker.
