Title: Youth Promotional Hunt Contest
Post by: FinsnFur on September 30, 2009, 08:06:32 PM
Fins and Fur Promotional Youth Hunt

First off I'd like to thank the numerous members for their contributions that are making this event possible.  :biggrin:

In promotion of encouraging more youth to get involved in our sport, and possibly on the forums...this contest will be open to all youth under the age of 18.

This contest will be broken up into four main categories:
   * Biggest Buck
   * Best Picture (with any game species)
   * Biggest Doe
   * Biggest Spike

Requirements:
   * Each Youth will be required to post their own hunting story of recent, along with a date stamped photograph.[/color]
   * No photoshop
   * No photos dated earlier then Sept. 30th 2009
   * And again, each childs story must be written and posted by him/ her, based on their  own individual  effort and merit.
   * All photos and stories, must be submitted by Jan.15th 2010
   * If the story and/or picture is posted outside of this thread, (which is fine) please state in the post that this is an entry for the Youth Hunt.

One Grand prize winner, with the best written story of his or her hunt, will be selected via member poll, from all categories combined.
This Grand Prize winner will become the owner of a Customized Remington 700 ADL Youth Rifle, scoped and chambered .243. Compliments of FOsteology.

Since we highly anticipate more contributions before this event ends, all other prizes will be distributed evenly amongst the four categories, with the highest valued items going to first place winners.

A complete list of items being giving away for this contest can be viewed HERE (http://finsandfur.net/forums/index.php?topic=10063.0).

Good luck to all.

EDITED TO ADD:
In fairness to all entries...Photo's that are not date stamped, must include a reference of some kind indicating the date of harvest.
A pic of the license, a hand made sign in the pic, etc. No photo shopped dates.

hello my name is Aaron. i am 11. my dad took me deer hunting this week end. saw many doe and babys. only buck i saw was a big spike. i have killed many deer and hogs since i was 6 and this was the first time in long time that i was excited.i had to take a few deep breaths as i was so excited. i had buck fever bad!!!
i chamberd a round took the safety off and boom! the deer fell like he was hit by a bolt of ligtening! he did not move. he was dead right there. i hit him high in the shoulder. the bullet took out his lung and hit his spine and the bullet did not come out. the bullet was under his skin on the other side. i was very happy and excited. 3 days latter we had his backstraps for dinner. yum yum!!

i shot him with my 250 savage my dad built me. i used winchester silvertip ammo 100 grain

EDIT 10/31/09 by FOsteology: I'm adding additional info. for Aaron. It seems my camera only lists the date stamp when the photo is viewed through the camera itself. It will not include the date stamp on the picture once uploaded to the PC.

We'll include a Fins and Fur 2009 Youth Hunting Contest banner in future submitted pictures.

Here is verification that Aaron took his "spike buck" 10/16/09

We understand if his submission is disqualified due to not meeting the published rules.

With a Dad like you've got, I dont doubt that for a second. :wink:
You've both got an awful lot to be thankful for and proud of, in each other.

Let me be the first to congratulate you Aaron, on a job well done. And by all means welcome to our site bud :wink: :congrats:

Congratulations on that big spike Aaron and a terrific story.  Don't get to upset about that buck fever, I just a few years older than you and I still get buck fever.

Aaron,

You are a lucky boy.  Not only for the spike and the write up on your hunt, but for having a dad who will take you out hunting.  I am guessing that the back straps were even better since they were provided by you.

Right on Aaron  :yoyo:.  If'n you don't get buck fever in my opinion you shouldn't be out there in the first place.  Good shooting and I like you and your fathers choice of cartridge.  Excellent story and good luck.

My Grandson is registered on the forum we just haven't done any hunting yet.

He is only 8 years old so he will be depending on me to tell him where to sit and when to shoot.

I will be  taken the pics and he will be doing the shooting

Yeah, I hope we get a lot more then this.
It's kind of a shame. We couldnt offer much more incentive.

Really is ashame that more kids are not involved.  A kid up here would only qualify for "Best Picture" since we do not have deer,  I just asked the wife to ask her friends if any have someone that would like to go, heck at this rate a photo of a squirrel might win "Best Picture"

John,

They would actually qualify for two categories..... Best Picture, and Grand Prize which is based on their hunt report/story submission.

My name is Matt and this is a picture of my seven point that I got 10/29/09 at 6 pm. I am 16 years old and this was the first time that I went out by myself and my first one with a bow. I was doing some of my chem homework in the stand  and every once in a while I would look up and scan the fields and as far back in the woods as I could.  Then I saw white tips slowly moving across the field. When it got to the trail, l I could see it was the buck I passed up the day before (it was 40 yards away ). So I made a grunt noise with my mouth because I forgot my call at the house, and he looked up. He was about  60 - 70 yards out and then he went into the woods. I grunted again to see if he would come out but he didn't. Then 30 yards from me he came out of another trail. By the time he got 15 yards from my stand I was shakin like a leaf.  When I drew back, my bow limb hit the metal bar on my treestand and he looked up. Thats when I took my shot. I got him towards the front of the shoulder. I watched him run 60 yards to where I first saw him, then I watched him fall. It was very exciting and very memorable!

Hamer, Matt has two younger brothers that are both up and coming hunters.  So "Uncle HuntnCarve" is hoping they'll be able to post something in the upcoming months?  As for Matt, he's taken a few deer and a Spring Gobbler or two.  The young man's a hunter!  Now I just have to get him to start working on the coyotes that are eyeing up their chickens.  He'll probably teach me a thing or two, or three... :highclap:

i saw my buck saterday nite. he was big. but he was staying in and close to the brush. we went back in the morning and saw him again. he know we were there as he was snorting and stomping in the brush at us. but he made a mistake. he came out a little. far enough for me to shot him. ihad buck fever again and reel bad! i was brething hard and my gun was heavy so my dad told me to take some big breaths and blow them out slow. i shot him behind the shoulder. it was a good shot! he ran a little then fell down. it was a good day as i got the biggest buck of my life.now i hope to get a bigger buck!

Your post reminded me :wink:

A heads up to all;
The announcing post states that all photos must be date stamped to verify the harvest took place during the contest.
In fairness to all entries...Photo's that are not date stamped, must include a reference of some kind indicating the date of harvest.
A pic of the license, a hand made sign in the pic, etc. No photo shopped dates.

I edited the announcing post to add the option of including date referencing pics for those unable to provide date stamped pics.

My name is Carson Brannan and my dad took me hunting in Gray, GA Jones county .That day was the best.  I was in the stand with my dad and we were about to go back to camp. We waited tell 9:20 and my dad had just stud up and a big doe came down the hill. My dad couldn’t set down. My dad whispered “wait there I hear a buck grunting.” Thin a big 9 pointer walked down the hill. I got excited and was scared to move. The buck walked in behind us. My dad picked my 3030 up and cocked it. My dad spooked the deer and the deer ran the way he came in and stopped. I grabbed the gun and propped it on the railing. I found the deer in the scope I pulled the trigger when the bullet hit I knew I killed that deer.

Hi, My name is Mark.  I am 14 yrs. old and I got this buck on Monday the 30th of November.  Once I got in the woods, my Dad and I sat at a tree for a few hours seeing at least 7 different deer.  I shot at a 6 point and missed 5 times.   I think two hours passed and these two little fawns came not even 2 foot away from me.  It was an exciting occurance.  After that my Dad and I went to eat and came back to the same spot as before.  This time we had my dads friend driving for us.  Ten minutes passed and my dad got a call from his friend saying he kicked up a doe and a 6 point.  Not even a minute went by before I saw that deer.  He was running right at me! I pulled the gun up right at his chest/heart and pulled the trigger.  I looked at him and he dropped right where I shot him.  It was so exciting, and this is my first buck.  Guess what, no buck fever!(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/HuntnCarve/MarksbuckRSPB.jpg)

Mark,

I found out that you have to have made 25 posts (you've only made 4) before you can send Private Messages here.  It's to prevent spamming.  I let FOsteology know that you were trying to get hold of him, and took care of the details.  Okay!

My deer story.

Hi! I'm Sarah and I'm 11 years old.  I got a 6 point which was supposed to be an 8 point but it got tangled up in some deer fence and broke it's antler, or so it looks.
Well i was in one of my favorite places this year, a horse farm when i shot my 3rd buck. I love horses and hunting so a 2 in 1 is awesome for me!
My Dad's friend calls me 'lightning in a bottle' because the last two years i got both of my bucks within 40 minutes total! This year no bucks came the first day, so we went out the following Wednesday to the horse farm. We hunted in a three sided shed in the middle of the pasture. About 2 hours had passed when we saw him. The horses had trotted in a frightened way across the field, so Dad knew there was something out there. Dad had snuck a peek out the side and there he was! About a 1/2 hour later, I took a look and he had jumped the fence and was in our pasture. After that i got excited. I couldn't help but peek out the side every few minutes. As soon as it started to move closer, Dad told me to sit down and stay quiet. He gets so shakey whenever im at the gun because hes happy for me (not of being scared that I would lose control of the gun/bow). Just a few minutes later he came into view at the cross-bow. I aimed and pulled the trigger delicately and he sprinted down the field and out of sight over a small hill. We thought he fell over, but weren't sure. It was getting dark so we walked over the top of the hill and found him exactly where we thought he was. We drug him to the woods and gutted him.  Then Dad snapped a few pictures and threw him in the trunk. When i got home my little brother, Dante, gave me a big hug. He hadn't gotten his deer yet. I was so happy and we would be having the 6 point for dinner one night!

Hi, my name is Rosana. I am nine years old. My dad took me hunting over at my grandpa's farm in Bearsville, WV. This was the first time that I went hunting that I carried a gun. It was my dad's AR-15. We put up a pop up blind and waited about 45 minutes. I had trouble holding the gun up for very long, so my dad made me some shooting sticks out of tree limbs and tape. My dad was costantly looking out of the flap of the blind. Finally he moved toward me and said there was a doe. I shifted my gun on the shooting sticks and looked in my scope. I found her in the scope by leaning over on my dad. I put the cross hairs on her shoulder and "BAM" it hit her. she tried to run but only went a couple of feet, fell to the ground, kicked, then she lay still. That was my first deer and I was so excited I was shaking.

Here is my deer and me.

Hi my name is Dante and I'm 9 years old.  I want to tell you about my buck I shot. Every year we go to deer camp with my cousins and uncles. The night before rifle season I stayed up late playing poker with the guys. On Monday morning we woke up at 5 'oclock had breakfast and went out before first light. We got up in the stand. I was really tiered. We stayed up for about 1 hour ½. My dad spotted a buck far away in the woods. We had to wait intill it came up the mountain onto the logen road. We lost sight of it for about ten minnutes. Then we saw a deer on the logen road. It was a doe and then 4 more doe went by. My dad looked threw the binocutors and said don't move a doe is staring right at us. Then suddenly it snorted and all five ran away. Suddenly the buck jumped out onto the logen road and my dad made a sound it stopped. About to seconds went by bam!!! The buck lonched forward then took off. After that 2 more deer ran by. We went to the spot and found some hair we couldn't find any blood. I wasen't fealling that confident. We followed the other deers footprints. I looked up ahead and there it was laying there. I ran up and yelled it's an eight point!!! After that we went back to were the buck ran and there was a highway of blood in it's track.  I shot it with a 223 and my dad said it was 146 yards and it was a good shot.

I am Kacee Crawford and this is my entry for the youth contest and on behalf of all of us kids I want to say thanks to all who support and understand the importance of youth hunting.  :biggrin:

This is my story about how I shot my buck on youth weekend at my Dad’s lease.  It was a really great experience that I hope to repeat every year!

My Mom, Dad, and I all went to my deer stand early in the morning.

When we got in the area, we forgot to turn and go behind the feeder and we accidentally drove up on a buck.   This did not bode well for our hunt.  We continued on and parked the truck in the normal place and walked all the way back to the blind.  This morning was not as cold as the one before but was still a little chilly. When we finally got in the stand we positioned my .243 so that I could make sure I could see the feeder.

At this point, I was tired, anxious, and impatiently waited for the sun to come up, and for the feeder to go off.  When it finally did start running, it was no time before the deer showed up.  They must have been waiting off in the trees and probably watching us the whole time.  The first to show up was a group of four does.  They stayed at the feeder for a long time, grazing on the corn until the bucks started to show up.

Then my Dad saw a deer coming in way off in the distance.  From that far away, he could already tell he was at least a ten point.  Then as he got closer my Dad said he thought he was an eleven point.  I was not sure at this point if I was going to get to shoot.  My best deer had only been a 135 eight point with a kicker.  This was more than I could expect for my Dad to let me shoot.

My Dad had to really look him over close to see if it was my turn!  I knew that if he allowed me to shoot this buck, that it would mean that his season would be over, all before it even started.

He looked him over for about six or seven minutes and then finally, with a smile, he said I could shoot him.

I prepared my gun, my Mom turned the safety off, and then “BOOM”, I shot the buck and the 85 gr TSX found its mark.

The buck ran about 20 â€" 30 yards and went behind some thick mesquite trees where we couldn’t see him for the longest time.  We were not sure if he had already laid down so we gave him about thirty more minutes to see if he would move.  While we waited the other bucks and the does kept running up and stomping at him so we knew he was still in the trees.

We decided that it had been long enough and my Dad got out of the stand to get a look at him from a different angle.  My Mom and I waited while he took his little walk.  Before he got very close, he looked back and said for me to come get your deer.

When my mom and I walked up on the deer my Dad had already given him a good look over and said he was actually a thirteen point.  I was so excited and overwhelmed with emotion. I knew how big this deer was and what my Dad had given up to give me this chance.

I watched my Dad look at the deer while he called his other lease mates and could just see the happiness in my Dad’s eyes.

My dad then said he had watched this deer for four years. My dad said the guys on the lease named him Baby.

We called him baby because the first time he was seen was four years prior and he was a large 10 for his age with his floppy ear on one side and he was seen two or three times a year after that, no he is a great buck and I am very proud that she took a mature buck that scores 153 4/8.  It is hard to describe the emotions when she walked up on the buck.

Dad had told me that there was a buck back where I decided to hunt that evening, but all day I'd seen nothing but a doe, so I didn't have high hopes. He had a doctor's appointment that day, and Mom had let me take one last try at  shooting a deer. As I walked through the crunching leaves, I saw the silhouette of a doe walking through the trees on the right side of the ravine I was walking through. Quickly, I raised my .30-30 to my shoulder and peered through the scope. When the doe walked into a gap between the trees, I fired. I listened as closely as I could and didn't hear her running off, so I went to look for her. Just as I started to think that she wasn't there, I heard footsteps and saw a doe closely followed by a buck coming down the other side. I hesitated, because I still wasn't completely sure that I had missed the doe. Just as I decided not to shoot, they both ran back up the other side from where they had come. I looked for my doe for another 10 to 15 minutes and finally decided that I hadn't hit her. The rain was picking up, so I decided to go back home when I heard footsteps on the other side again. When I spotted the deer and then found him in my scope, I realized that the buck was coming back. I fired once, and watched in horror as he trotted through the bottom of the ravine, apparently unharmed. I shot again. This time I was sure I'd hit him. He trotted some more and stood there like he didn't know what was going on. Never having had an experience like this before, I didn't know what to do. Just as I was about to shoot again, he crouched down on the ground. I was about to come in closer when he tried to run back up the other side, but failed and rolled over, dead. My heart was in my throat. When I got to my trophy, I counted 7 points and guessed he was about 12 or 13 inches wide. He had a very big body. I am very proud of my first buck that I shot on my own.
Thanks you Fins and Fur for the opportunity to do this contest and thanks for the advice, Dad! I would have posted my story earlier, but I was hoping I would get a shot at another, bigger buck, but as you probably guessed that didn't happen.

WoW! The kids sure have posted up some nice deer this season.

Still have some time before the contest comes to a close (next Friday). I believe I'll let my oldest boy (Joe age 14) skip school for a couple days and see if we can get him on a last minute buck or doe.

It's me Bob and I would like to enter the contest if I meet all the requirement, I'm just going to copy my story to here

Hi guys it's me Bob

Today me and my old man went out calling coyotes and I was really happy that I might get my first coyote, calling. We went out North West of our house  to a stand beside some bales, we sat down and let everything calm down. About 5 minutes later dad was getting his gun ready to shoot and I just seen the coyote when dad shot and you know what, HE MISSED :doh2:. We went to our second stand on a cut line where we had already seen a coyote sitting in the field as we drove by so I called and waited for about 3 minutes and a coyote came out around the wrong corner( I call it a wrong corner because my gun was pointed the other way), any way I moved my gun very slowly to point at him and by that time the coyote was within 100 yards, so I set up and pulled the trigger but I missed, I shot again and I missed again, but you didn't here it from me :innocentwhistle:. Anyway after that we went driving and I seen a nice mule buck so I got some pictures to show you.

Nice rack, eh? After that we went to a different stand on a friends piece of land.I sat here with my dad sitting just in the bushes to the left of me.

We sat there for about 10 minutes and a nice little coyote came out of the bush right in my sights :eyebrow: I settled in and squeezed the trigger, when it hit he started to spin like a beserk top. when he came to rest I was shaking like a cold little calf getting some warm milk in my tummy. I came walking down the hill feeling like a bit of a super hero because this was my first ever coyote that I shot calling.

Here comes the hero poses

after that I was pretty pumped so we were driving to another stand when I seen a porcupine and of course we stopped, because I love talking to little animals. Here is a couple pics. for you guys.

anyway after that little episode we went to another stand and called for about 5 minutes and 1 coyote was walking in :eyebrownod: and then another  :nono: and then one came in within 50 yards right in front of me :biggrin: after that I just aimed and dropped him, but the sound was kinda funny because all there was, was a Bang Wop.

We went to another stand that was just half a mile away from the first one. We sat there for about 20 minutes and I was about to leave when a coyote jumped up in front of me and scared my pants off. When we were leaving I seen a nice size Whitetail antler on the ground

So If anybody wants it my dad could bring it down when he goes to the states.

Well after that we went home, and here's my pic. with my first ever Coyotes.

Thanks you Mr.Groves for giving my dad that called in the first coyote I ever shot
& thank you Mr. Latta for giving me the call that brought in the coyote that I called.
Bob
