Title: My baby's been wounded.
Post by: FinsnFur on July 24, 2011, 08:48:57 AM
I smucked a nice little fork buck in velvet Friday night with my truck doing about 70mph :(
Coming back from picking my girls up for the weekend.
I gotta say some people hate those anti-lock brakes, but I think they have saved me more then once. You cant help but to panic and mash that pedal to the floor.
As many deer as I have hit up here I find it amazingly uncanny how everything is always timed just right so the front of the vehicle and the deer meet at the exact same time. A split second either way could cause a near miss, but nooooooooo....everything lines up perfectly every time :S

The ole F150 took it pretty well. Smashed up the headlight, bent the bumper slightly, and shoved the front corner panel back just enough to prevent me from opening the driver side door. But amazingly enough not a lot of visual damage.
But it still broke my heart. I'm pretty passionate about my trucks and stuff like this hits me pretty hard.  :(

I told the kids, that was the last deer I was going to shove down the highway with my bug shield. :iroll: Next truck I'm getting a brush-guard from hell.

Aw, Jim, I feel for you.

The Australians have the ultimate cow catchers on every vehicle outside of major cities.  Google a look.  Huge tubular steel guards that protect the front and extend past the sides.  They hit so many kangaroos that every rig has them, and the big grey 'roos are about the size of a mule deer doe.  A friend called them jumper bumpers.  They look funny on a new Mercedes.

Got a truck & deer story.  A friend of mine bought a new Ford 4x4 pickup, and the first day he had it he took his younger brother for a drive.  In rolling farmland on paved road they saw some deer in a field and a fork horn buck started trotting toward the road.  My friend wasn't driving very fast so he stopped dead still to let the buck go ahead of him and avoid any chance of getting a scratch from the buck on his new truck.  Doggone if the buck didn't swerve a bit as it jumped the fence and ran smack into the passenger side door, putting big gouges in the metal with its antlers.   The buck staggered off and my friend's brother was trying to keep from laughing.  The truck owner's name:  Jim.  You guys have bad luck!

I believe those anti lock brakes have saved my bacon a time or two as well. Especially in a swerve onto the wed median grass strip to avoid the wreck that had just happened in front of us on a 65MPH highway.  :whew:

It doesn't sound like the truck got hit too hard tho. Have you popped,, or tried to  :eyebrow: ,, the hood yet?

Maybe Barry might have some parts he can loan ya.

It'll be OK Jim!! I found out just how tough those Fords are & thought I would share it with you. I hope this commercial brings a little joy to your life right now as I'm sure you have your head stuck in that damn bottle again.   :innocentwhistle:

The bottle uh?  :laf:
Oh yeah...I forgot I'm the board lush :doh2:
I never seen that commercial but it sounds just like "those other guys".
The only damage to the hood is luckily behind the bug shield which flexed enough it has a hole in it now instead of being shattered.

Me and the oldest daughter went out yesterday morning and unbolted the fender and slid it ahead where it belonged, to allow the driver door to open. You could see from the scraped paint under the washers that had got shoved back about 1/4 inch.

I have no problems believing that story Okanagan. You can help but to wonder sometimes with those deer. :laf:
I've heard of the push bars from across the drink, but I've never seen one. I think they call them Bull Bars dont they? I'll have to look em up.

The good thing is it was a Ford and not a good Chevy! If I was taking a chance every time I drove of hitting a deer I would buy a ford too!

I would much rather you bend up your bumper than swerve off the road and hit a tree or worse....

Sorry about your truck....And the deer.

Wendy, If I had been driving any Chevrolet product at the time, they'd be shoveling up the remains of a nice looking 45 year old man, and his two beautiful teenage daughters from the highway, with a stick and a spoon. :laf:

The ONLY reason there's not a lot of visual damage, and the mere fact that we were able to drive away unhindered in anyway other then spiritually,  is owed entirely to the Ford Tough infrastructure of a well built, durable, git r done and keep on going truck.
Oh and did I mention best selling truck in the world for 34 straight years running? :sneer:

By the way if you were trying to lift my spirits, it worked.
I told my youngest daughter today, Dad's truck looks like it's crying with one droopy eye. She's says I dont think it's the truck crying

No Art...they dont all look like that. Your confusing us with that Bowtie family :doh2: Now those are some garbage.

Wendy, we seen another truck today that looked like it pushed a woodchuck down the highway, on the back of a flat bed recovery vehicle, it was a chibby.
I told the girls, us Ford drivers just keep our foot on the gas, never break stride,  texting and drinking and barrel right through, dont even look up. Your safe in the Ford. :alscalls: :alscalls:

Here's a link to some Aussie bull bars.  These are kind of wimpy and cosmetic looking, but they were harder to find on the internet than I expected and I didn't google at it very long.

http://www.oaq.com.au/

I was there maybe ten years ago and compared to all that I found for sale on the web, the locals must have been building most of the ones I saw on outback roads.  They were massive, without the slightest nod to looks.  The closest are the bottom row of pictures in the link, left and right bottom corner photos.  Picture those guards without any angles or wrap around the front kind of cosmetic bends, just straight across the front, sticking out slightly wider, made of heavier steel and probably a bit rusty or painted black!

Serious rancher roo bars!

Check these out, on town cars!  http://www.stevekuo.com/bullbars/

QuoteThere's been a push by the Australian government to ban these attachments as they can cause tremendous injury to pedestrians

I have to agree with the Australian government.  The front of a truck is much softer without that bull bar.    :innocentwhistle:    :alscalls:

If you put one of those on your pickup, (there are a lot of them around here), your Ford would look like it has braces.  :innocentwhistle:

I will try to catch Brad H and find out who built his. It is custom made and doesn't look like a set of braces. I'm sure it is far stronger too.

I dont care what it looks like. It looks better than twisted up body panels, zip ties, and duct tape. I dont know how people can drive that junk.

I'll prolly get laughed at for having it on a two wheel drive also...but I promise I'll sleep just fine :eyebrownod:

Neither, Bill :nono:

That lower trim piece under the grill, I replaced. The old one (top two pics) was maroon and mangled and it said EFI under the headlight.

The new one is black, unmangled, and says 4X4 under the headlight :eyebrow: :laf:

When I was at the bone yard taking out the headlight, I seen how easy it was to replace that piece once the headlights were out. So I grabbed that too.

It seems like a little too much black up there, but what the heck, it's not mangled, and after all...it's nothing more then a battering ram for hooved rats.
I'll probably be shoving another one down the highway before spring anyway, and we can change colors up again. :laf:

Yeppers, that be a deer.

There was a series of photo's circulating a few years ago of a NASCAR car that hit a coyote at 190mph. Sucked it right in just like the deer above!

You need to install a solid front bumper that's angled in such a way in that if a deer is hit, it'll just flip up over the truck.  :laf:

I had people at work say the same thing HaMeR. It did look like a pole hole. :laf: Except there was deer hair mashed in behind the license plate screws.

Dan she might be old but she's no where near as old as you, an I'm betting shes got a whole lot more giddy up in her gallop. :eyebrownod:  Now quit pickin on er :sad3:

What could the dude have possibly been thinking when he cut the tree so it would fall in his truck?!!!!  Apparently he wasn't thinking.

Good idea on loading except he left weight and physics out of the equation.
