Title: Equipment for LBL hunt
Post by: Bopeye on January 05, 2007, 09:46:39 PM
I just thought it might be interesting to start a thread for what you will be taking for the LBL hunt. Equipment for hunting and also equipment for camp. As many of you know the campground is quite primitive.............so let's hear what your bringing to make the hunt and camp more "comfortable".

My short list:

My gun....in a gun sock. It's illegal to drive around with a gun out in the LBL.
Lot's of ammo.
Two pairs of camo pants. Cold weather and warmer weather
Two camo coats. Cold weather and warmer weather
Long Johns..........for chicken dance.  :innocentwhistle:
Nif-T-seat
Daypack
hand calls
two pairs of gloves
shooting sticks
sub-zero sleeping bag
first aid kit
Extra toilet paper
snuff.......lot's of it
medications............ :eyebrownod:
Lawn chair for camp
Two canteens
Lot's of Vienna weiners and snicker bars
two knives........at the very least
head net
underclothes
several pairs of socks....warm and cold weather
two pair boots.........warm weather and cold weather

All I can think of right now, but am hoping someone will post something I have forgotten, like a toothbrush, deodorant, etc.
Remember, weather changes fairly easily there........especially being between two good sized bodies of water. Go over prepared........just my opinion.

Don't forget such things as bottled water for those long hikes around the place.

An electric heater just in case it is cold cause the one they provide might be lacking in the btu department if temps really drop. Fuel oil heaters are not allowed!!!

With the wet winter we are having an extra pair of boots isn't a bad idea either. You might wind up with wet feet and that ain't no fun.

A come along winch might be a good thing to have along with a good tow strap just in case. I usually have both a come along and chains up there and will give folks my cell number for emergencies. With the weather we are having, I don't know from week to week what shape various roads are in.

Maps can be downloaded online at http://www.lbl.org   get what you think you will need.

If I think of anything else I will add to this. Jimmie

Along the food line, I usually make a big pot of soup, chili beans, or anything along that line; Here at the house the day before I leave. Then I throw in a crock pot, griddle and a small one burner electric stove. Though this year I think I  will bring along a George Foreman grill. It will be quick and easy cooking if needed. We normally fill the crock pot up when we leave in the morning and supper is ready when you come home that night. Worked pretty good last year, can't say we didn't eat well while we were there.

For the ones that have never been to the LBL before, Food is a pretty good ride away.

At least we won't have to worry about the little seed ticks at this time of year.

I would add to the list bring a flashlight and a good compass or GPS.  It is easy to get turned around in those LBL hills.   :eyebrownod:

Fellas, th campground is already well provided with stiped kitties. And I figure with the crowd we're gonna have there will already be too dang many stinkers there without them. And besides, I don't trust a danged yankee with anything in a pickle.  :nono: Jimmie

Don't worry Bop. Just trip and roll down one of them hills. I can't hit squat heading down hill in a hurry and I doubt Rich could either :eyebrownod:

And just to keep this half way inline here. Don't forget some kind of small emergency kit . Candle and matches for firestarting and a flashlight for signaling.  I will just in case I try to finish breaking my leg this year. Jimmie

Wow, I guess I am a yankee also. Was born and raised in Akron Ohio. I just moved to Tennessee this past July. Much more suitable to my habits (hunting, fishing, golf). Like I tell the guys at work, I may be a yankee, but my neck is not completly white..... :roflmao: Seariously, I always think easy on trips like this. A loaf of bread an a package of bolognia go a long way. Even better with some cheese (to go with the wine  :eyebrow:).

:wo: Now Jimmie, why would you and Rich be shooting at me? Since when did southern boys start shooting their own?  :nono:

Newdog..........don't sweat the yankee thing. The first 10 years I lived here they called me "yankee" or "city boy". I'm from a town in Nebraska that sports a whopping population of 311 people, chickens, cats, dogs, and rats. They were wrong on both accounts.  :eyebrownod:
Been here almost 25 years or so and still get called a yank every now and then........go figure. :rolleye:

Wars over boys. The North won, but we have Nascar..........makes it an even draw.  :laf:
