I think he saw the doe coming and wanted to impress her.  "Hey!  Look at me.  I downed this big buck.  You could be next."  That is when she ran.

Jerry, I think that doe was a little spike buck.  Probably thought he would be on the ground next so he got out of Dodge in a hurry.
When they come for mine they better bring theirs
