This is a really good video of the red fox mousing on deep snow. Fabulous ability to get a meal.

I remember seeing that on the actual TV show. Still interesting as heck to watch. :congrats:
That goes to show you, just how good of hearing canines have! Wow!!
That was on the North American series and after I watched them I got the DVD. Really high quality in all areas. One of the things about the fox section, if memory serves me correctly, is that they are more successful when their prey is north of the fox. Something about their magnetic ability when facing north. Someone who has a better memory might be able to help me out here. I tried thinking about it while facing north, but it didn't work for me.

Absolutely correct Ronnie. Sitting up on a windmill one morning I spotted a coyote about two miles away. I had my little scorpion e-caller dangling from one of the cross members on the mill, about forty feet from the ground. Turned it on full blast and that coyote stopped and looked directly at the area it was coming from.
Let's throw this into the conversation, now why is it when you make a stand and don't call anything in but then move say 200 yards an one comes in like on a string. I don't think it's because he couldn't hear you. Could be he was just to lazy to walk the extra 200 yards. Ever notice how when your out calling you can hear door slam 1/2 mile or further away. These coyotes really keep a man thinking.
LOL Jerry
Thats about how it went...says they have a higher success rate when facing north.
Here's the prior conversation after the show.. http://forum.finsandfur.net/index.php?topic=17189.msg193949#msg193949
Cool video. I've seen both coyotes & the Reds do that out on the foothills. Notice their ears before diving. They will both point inward & forward. As they triangulate the sound of the critter. Obviously their hearing is top notch.
In stout winds they will often be found on the down-wind side of hilly terrain & or ground cover. Anything that offers them a wind brake area. So their hearing is not muted/distorted or interfered with. In high winds the only time I stay home. Is when there is blowing snow or pelting ice. Both of those conditions. Will cause either canine. To either hunker down in a wind brake area or seek hard shelter.
