Today i took a stroll down to the C&E gun show to sell some rounds.  I came across a vendor with a display case full of sound suppressors and stopped for a closer look.  The vendor asked me what caliber i needed and i regretfully informed him that i did NOT have an FFL.  He laughed and said "Oh i get that one all the time" He then proceeded to educate me on the 3 methods of legally obtaining and possessing a silencer in NC.
1) Obtain written approval by your sheriff (least likely)
2) ATF approval for corporate use (didn't pursue that one)
3) Create a trust with the FBI for $200 (BINGO)

Requirements for eligibility are identical to pistol laws.  Takes 10-12 weeks and about 10 pages of paper work.  AND :eyebrow: to top it off, the silencers started at $300 bucks!!  Unfortunately, the .338 can was just under a grand.  But i'm thinkin 6.8 :wo:

Right after i find a new job, finish HVAC certification, and move back into the country :sneer: :whew:

That means, there is a common misconception that someone has been spreading around.  You know, the one that says only certain privilaged individuals can own these nifty little things.  Gee, i wonder who's behind that one :innocentwhistle:

I have heard good things about their silencers.

There is more to getting ATF approval than that guy at the gun show led you to believe.  But it can be done.

bushmaster

Those are the same one's he was selling. YHM!!  I'm tellin' ya semp, this guy showed me the paper work and walked me through it. Cuz I sure as hell didn't believe him at first.  How far off are ya?  The gun shows til 5pm today.  Come to my house and i'll drive the next 5 miles to the show :eyebrownod:

I've always wondered if those cough silencers would suppress a fart?    And if it did would it still smell?

bushmaster

I'd say that depends on the load your shooting :roflmao:

A fart silencer? Have to be subsonic. It wouldnt work for me! Some guys have them for 22 LR. Nice when squirrel hunting.

Lots of easy ones you can make yourself, on a 22, you just hear the firing pin and thud of the bullet.

bushmaster

Yeah, i mean legally.  To get authorization to build a silencer takes a bit more paperwork. And from what i've researched, a class 3 ffl.

If I am not mistaken it takes a special class 3 to MAKE one. It takes a class 3 and a special permit from the ATF to OWN one. A gunsmith friend of mine has his class 3 permit and can legally make silencers. Has made several for different buyers. Mostly Police officers, but also a varmint control specialist and also for a member of the military. I will ask him the specifics tomorrow when I see him.

Just picked up my YHM 7.62 Phantom QD silencer this past sunday. ITS AWESOME!!! :yoyo:

To settle the issue of legally obtaining one.
1) I started a trust in my name
2) Got it notarized
3) Payed $700 for the silencer
4) Submitted a Form-4 application to BATFE with $200 for NFA tax stamp
5) Have never been convicted of a felony or violent crime
6) Waited 12 weeks for ATF clearance

you shot with it yet ?   work good ???

bushmaster

Oh yeah!!  With supersonic ammo it sounds like a .22 without the carrying echo.  But with subsonic loads, SILENT.  There is no sound from the muzzle. But you can hear the bullet make its rotations through the air followed by a loud smack.

I will start a new thread as soon as i find the damn camera, its here somewhere.

Hey Silencer,  try these out.  .22 LR and no noise.  Good for close in shooting on sparrows, etc.
