Went for flatheads for first time today first rod to go down was mine. Immediately it started peeling drag in the holder. I picked out and started reeling. I figured it was a decent fish. Once i got him close to the boat he wouldnt come off the bottom i figured i had something then. I kept pressure on him and finally the leader and sinker was showing. He broke surface and went for the bottom. I kept steady pressure on em and finally got him turned and landed him. In the boat he looked cllose to 30. My spring scale said 24 lbs but i have my doubts. After pics i stuck him back in the water and held him till he swam off.

Them spring scales suck. I cant believe them even make them yet.
My digital scale batteries were dead. I wanna check the accuracy of the spring scale then cause he looked bigger.
This fish was awesome to fight as well.

I finally got around to checking the spring scale against a more accurate digital scale. I filled a bucket up with 24lbs worth of stuff verified via the spring scale I used and then checked on a digital scale and the digital said 29lbs. my digital was dead when I caught that fish so I didn't have a way to check it then with the digital.
couple details.
caught him out of 10ft of water which is deep for this stretch of the river. late afternoon. bluegill fillet from something that was pan sized. killed me cutting it up for cutbait and throwing it on a hook for bait instead of the frying pan. water was slightly stained and was flowing pretty good. 63deg was what the water temp was. 6/0 circle hook on a slip rig.
Thanks fellas it is the biggest fish I have caught to date. I knew it was big with the way it hit. it was great to see it swim away though.

Actually i have. I weighed some deer meat this past fall on the electronic scale and then took it to butcher shop and it was within a couple ozs. As well as in snake season this year.

I ask because you ASSumed a scale that takes a battery is more accurate but you didn't have either certified. Using a butchers scales is just as folly. Does either scale say "NOT FOR TRADE"? Your admission that your scale differed from the butchers is proof. You might as well have said you caught a 1 or 2 # cat.

If you want everyone to believe your "accomplishments", use some believable certified scales. That's all...just sayin...

I weigh anything by putting a 2x4 across a stump then balancing the object im weighing on one end and then I one by one pile full Pabst blue ribbon beer cans on the other end til it balances out! :yoyo: :innocentwhistle: And it is trade certified, " Hey Jimbo Ill trade ya 2 of these PBR's for a cigar"......... :wink:

That backs up what I was saying. If the scales haven't been calibrated and certified, it's just another fish. If your cool boyfriends thought it "smashed" the record, they would have ran to some certified scales. BUT THEY DIDN"T!! They BS'd you and you believed it. Oh well, some can't be helped or enlightened. They might as well used the PBR's and 2x4 method.

Dont you fish with 4man anymore greyfox? He used to flathead fish all the time. For all our quarrels we had he was a heck of an outdoorsman. Anything that walked crawled or swam in his area he could catch it or hunt it.

Okenagan. I dont know. I thought it was bigger then even 30 lbs but didnt want to make assumptions or assume that it was bigger. I have seen smaller fish be claimed that they were 40 plus. Whatever really dont matter to me. We'll call it 24 then so someone doesnt think im trying to pull one over on you guys.

Story with no reflection on your fish: I rattled in a pretty fair whitetail in really thick timber and brush for a newbie who had never shot a deer. I could see 15 yards and had put him in a slot downwind to see 30 yards at max, 15-20 most directions. After his shot and some congratulations I asked how far the buck was from him when he shot, because I couldn't see it. He said that it was at least 75 yards, maybe more. I looked around at the tight cover and with a smile said, "I'll bet it was 125 yards." From that day till this, the shot was 125 when he tells the story. :alscalls:

Ben-- If you scroll on down to my old post "Nice flathead" ,, you'll see a 20.2lb'er. That fish was weighed on a certified digital scale at the baitshop that hosts the local catfish tournaments around here. I believe your fish may weigh even more than 24lbs.
