Title: Squirrel opener...
Post by: Coulter on October 16, 2016, 07:50:28 AM
Zack and I went out chasing bushytails for the season opener instead of vying for a spot in an overcrowded duck swamp yesterday. We ended up with three, but the morning was pretty cold and we had to take time out to go run the fishing boat for an hour to see if the engine problem was fixed. Luckily that seems to be good now.

We ended the day with another quick hunt and putting the North Bay ShadowTail squirrel call to work. Here's Zack...

Good picture.  I still can't get over squirrel seasons.

Nice pic!
What's that you're using, Zack?
I'm sure there's history to that gun.

The crock pot is the way to go for these bad boys. We'll have to get out and shoot some more. I think Zack said it is a Savage 74, he'll have to chime in on that though. Nice little gun and feels good in the hands.

Congrats on the tree rats.  I don't kill them any longer because I can't find anyone willing to accept them.   I used to give them to a neighbor but he passes several years ago.  When we did them here they went in the crock pot for the day with a can of beer, mid afternoon the meat would just shred, and then the crock pot was drained and refilled with shredded meat and barbecue sauce.  It came out tasting like shredded beef, but Becky things just getting pre-shredded beef is easier.

Ahhh, a can of beer, I'll have to give that a try next time. I just used water and some seasoning. That's the first time I actually liked the way I cooked it. Thanks for the tip Jerry

Savage Model 74. It's a lever action single shot .22 LR. My grandpa passed it down to me about 10 years ago. He changed the original iron sights to 30-30 style sights. I like the shroud the front sight has. The rear sight used to be a basic leaf spring type with an elevator ramp to it. The rear is fixed to the barrel so I don't have to worry about it canting from side to side. It's probably my favorite gun I have. Well, all of my guns are my favorite  :laf:, but this one is at the top of the list.
