Does any body have some plans or pictures of some home made deer feeders? I'm looking for a simple feeder that mainly uses gravity and not one of those battery powered spinner thingy's. I made one a few years ago out of a couple of 5 gallon buckets, but a darn pack rat took up home in the tree and chewed up my feeder to bits. :argh: I'm not using the feeder to hunt over like baiting, but to attract some deer onto our place to get them to visit our ground a little bit more regular.

I saw one at a guys house the other day that was just a 5 gallon bucket hung from a tree with a broom handle hanging out of the bottom of it. Whan the deer push on the broom handle the corn falls out on the ground. I don't have any details, but I'm sure someone else on here knows how it was made.

We've made some like this before, pretty simple.

They usually only get chewed up when they are empty.
we use plastic pipe and cut a notch in one end and screw a metal tray on the bottom and scew a metal plate on the top and secure it with metal band used for hanging car exaust.....They seem to last a long time. :wink:
Frogman, I made a few of those broom handle jobbers about 10 years ago. And I completely forgot about those. And now I remember why. The ones that I made had a tree branch for a pole, and the part of the branch that was in the bucket was suppose to have about 3 or more branches coming coming off of it at the same place. Then the deer would bump the branch, and the food would come out. The issue I had with the ones that I made was that the feed would never stop coming out. It would all just run out on the ground. I tried to put some mollasses in it to slow it down, but then nuthin would come out when it got cold. :madd:
iahntr, does the food in the bottom of the Y ever get moldy since it seems to never get removed? I wander if you would have to drill a few holes in the bottom to let the rain water drain out?

I have built several out of PVC just like that one in iahntr's post but we always put a drain in the bottom elbow so that water doesn't build up and allow the corn to freeze sollid
Here's another idea,
A kick feeder is awesome. Take a large galvanized trash can and drill 4 - 1/2" holes around the sides at the bottom of the can. Cut a circle of wood to fill the gap in the bottom outside of the can and secure to can. Mount the can onto a freshly cut 6" stump left three feet off the ground. Fill the can with corn and the deer will learn to kick the stump to dislodge the corn. No other cridders will be able to get to the holes and steal corn. Use bungie cords to secure the lid to the can to protect from the weather and keep other cridders out. Corn lasts for a month and the deer kick the crap out of the stump.

Buckstand, never made one, but one of the guys at work talks about using a toilet plunger inside the bucket. Make the hole in the bottom smaller than a standard plunger, set the plunger down inside with the dowel sticking out the bottom and then fill it up with corn. The weight keeps the bucket sealed until it is bumped, releasing corn. He put peanut butter on the dowel to "train" the deer to release the corn. Never tried it, but he swears by it.

What i use for a deer feeder is a 5 Gallon Bucket a broom handle and a bolt and a rope
Drill hole in the end of broom handle put the bolt a nuts in then drill hole in the bucket and put the broom handle threw the 5 gallon bucket fill with feed
hang from tree or what ever you like when the deer touch the broom handle a little corn or feed will fall out ... There you go and good luck

I don't recall the corn gettin moldy, but like LORDDAL said, put a drain, or like you mentioned,
drill holes in the bottom for moisture to get out.

I did a few calculations, and that 5 foot tall feeder out of 4" pvc will hold about 3.25 gallons of feed.
I may do something similar, and attach that 4" Y out of the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. The only tricky part will be attaching it to a tree, but I figure I'll be able to accomplish that. Hopefully I'll have it all assembled by this weekend.

If you used 6" pvc, then the volume of a 5' tall feeder would hold 7.3 gallons.
Here is what I ended up with for my feeder. Two 5 gallon buckets bolted together with a 4" pipe out of the bottom into a 4" WYE.

2 five gallon buckets - 2X $2.75
4" WYE - $6.50
2 lids for the buckets - 2X $1.25
4" closet flange - $3.40
4" sewer cap - $1.20
8" of 4" pvc pipe - had some laying around
misc bolts, nuts and washers - $2.00
Now I just have to figure out how to attach it to the tree. :confused:
