Title: Mylar skirts
Post by: FinsnFur on June 01, 2017, 10:07:02 PM
Anyone on here use them for their fishing jigs, spinner baits etc?
I had no idea what they even were until a gal seen my post and sent me some samples. It's kinda like strips of plastic non sticky tape. I cant even imagine that being realistic looking in the water. She sent me a bunch of stick on eyes and stuff too.

I like a few mylar strands in jig skirts, either the iridescent ones or silver.  I have even taken strands of Christmas tree tinsel and tied a few around a jig just behind the head to add some flash to the skirt.  On salmon and trout jigs that are shaped like a minnow or baitfish, we often glue iridescent mylar strips on the sides.  I have some peel and stick silver/iridescent mylar in fish scale pattern that I cut from a sheet to fit the lure.

Stick on eyes are good.  Put big ones on every lure where they fit.   I've read that predator fish go for things with big eyes.

Will admit that I don't fish jigs much out here and only use them when fishing back east for bass, crappie etc. or north east for pike, walleye etc. and have never used a mylar jig skirt.   I have some homemade salmon flies a friend made and that I have copied that have mylar strips along with some fur and feathers.  Haven't fished them much.

I never thought of mixing a few strands with silicone or hair skirts. I like that idea.
Bit I'm still struggling with the thought of using a straight mylar one. I can only imagine it looks like a book of matches swimming through the water.

Cut the strips every 1/8" so you have a more skirt like appearance. Or kilt like if that6s what you prefer.  :eyebrownod: :eyebrownod:

Interesting stuff on that link nasty. That stuff looks a lot more like skirt material than what I got.
This stuff came from http://www.shopwtp-inc.com/

The stuff on your link looks like the stuff that comes on my all time favorite jigs from Johnson baits in Texas. See the green shit they have in here. I love it.

I've got some of that in green, silver white and pink that I use in making flies for Coho salmon.  Just a few strands in a sparse streamer fly makes it sparkle.  Trouble is, haven't had a chance to fly fish for Coho in several years.

I tie nothing but that on a streamer hook and slam the fish. It is all about the flash! And i dont mean the kind of flashing that gets you arrested😇👍

Nasty but when you ARE talking about that kind of flashing, you tie some of this on your crank or what? :alscalls:

And that John is the reason many of us would like to live your state.
