Title: Weather reports from your area? Freezing rain here
Post by: Okanagan on December 28, 2017, 12:13:10 PM
Freezing rain this morning that keeps falling, with a layer of clear ice already a half inch thick on top of a prior 3 inches of snow.  Everything has a coat of ice.  My neighbor was shoveling his walk and I started to.  After two scoops that cleared about 2 square feet, I reconsidered and quit shoveling.

As I was concerned might happen, that clear patch of cement sidewalk now has a thickening layer of ice building on it and is much more slippery to step on than the ice crusted snow.  We haven't heard from our daughter in Pennsylvania and wonder how much the big snow in Erie hit her place near Valley Forge.  Dave & Dave, how is it in your area?

I was going to take the Suzi 4x4 on a run to the nearest grocery store but won't even do that now.  It is time for hot drinks and hibernation.

Nothing going on here, Okan.  THere's a 25% chance of a little snow Saturday and the trucks are out brining the roads.
I know it's all relative, but it's cold here;  single digits this morning, John P! (most everyone else can ignore this).

We had six inches of show a few days ago and of course it hit when I had the snowblower torn apart replacing blades.  Since then no snow, but it has been cold.  High today was 10 above, but the wind sort of drove it through a person.

31 F here but it is supposed to get up to 36 tonight.  An hour ago the ice build-up reversed and started melting slightly faster than it is building.  Now we have water on top of ice, but ground warmth is starting to melt the icy sidewalks.  I'll stay home and see what it is like tomorrow.

Our worst winter driving conditions come when the temps hang right at freezing or a degree below, and that is a common winter temp just inland here on the north Pacific Coast.  Fog will cling to any surface and form a coat of ice on it, rain drizzle does the same.  If wind is light, low hilltops will be above freezing the but where a road goes through a dip the temp in the bottom will be below freezing and the road covered with black ice, often with as little as 100 feet of elevation difference.   Bridges are bad for ice of course, as anywhere.

Right now it's 9*F with a north east wind about 5 MPH. About 1 inche of snow on the ground. Looking at a low of 2 tonight. Looking at 2 more inches possible Saturday morn.

Be a good night for some calling. But I have to work.

Something has to give with this global warming!
I have about had it, 20 degrees above is just to dang hot for this time of yr.

I guess it's all the emissions from these kayaks â›´ it seems they are very popular.

I wrote a story about Neanderthal scientists arguing about global warming and the retreat of the Ice Age glaciers but don't know of any magazine that would buy it.

It must be tough to be a weatherman.   In our area there are a lot of winter forecasts within a degree of freezing.  If they predict 33 degrees with rain and miss by a degree or two, we get 31 degrees and a foot of snow.  The forecast for last night was warmer temps with no rain, but we got more freezing rain and added another quarter inch layer of ice, a good 3/4 inch thick on my car.

Looks like Global Warming is hitting most of the area and not just Ohio.   :innocentwhistle:   Seems like the US should invest a few more trillion dollars to stop it.  Wait, there isn't a democrat in the White House, so that probably won't happen.

Ice broke down trees and power lines here, power went out twice, second time for 9 hours, no internet access from yesterday mid-morning till now.

Every ten years or so this place will get ice several inches thick.  This time it is only about an inch thick due to melting thinner once in awhile part way through the three or four day process.   Still raining lightly but temp a smidge above freezing so the ice thickness is holding about even, melting as much old ice as freezing new.

FWIW the power went out with a pie in the oven but it had baked for 25 minutes so I left it to coast with the oven door not opened for another hour, and it baked almost perfectly.

Pics below from yesterday morning when ice was over half inch thick.  Still figuring out Imgur sizes of photos.

This morning.  I pull up the windshield wipers off of the windshield and leave them that way during storms so that they are out of the ice when I clear the windshield.

The ice weight broke a cross arm on a power line tower for the main power line that crosses the Fraser River.  120K people without electrical power for awhile, some still without.

John, just seeing your name reminds me of those pics you have posted of your back yard and sipping patio in the Arizona sun!

We keep the Zuki in the attached garage.  We never drive anything but the Suzuki when it is snowy and my wife can get in it without going out in the snow or ice.  Also,  I can load it with hunting gear, drive it in the garage and never unload it though I take out certain items when we drive around town.

That ice looks like one of those situations when your car freezes solid and you can't get the doors open to get into it. Been there and done that more than once.  Last year I had to run a heat gun out to my rig in on the driver side door run it around the edge of the door to it warmed up enough then I got a big huge screwdriver stuck it in the crack to pry the door open enough to get my hand in to pull the door open ! Real pia! Then there is pulling up to a drive-through window to get your morning coffee and your power windows frozen solid shut . 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

You can have the deep cold.  But I'd prefer that to the ice we've had lately.  Every day the weather forecast says it will warm up tomorrow.  Day after day it doesn't.  Pics from this morning, though the ice melted a bit yesterday afternoon.

Ice on the trees.  God's ornaments.   My camera doesn't come close to capturing it.

Last night with clear sky and full moon, the ice covered trees looked like crystal chandeliers lit by the moon.  We turned off all of the lights in the house to see the ice covered trees in the little park behind our place.

Every day they predict a warm afternoon and when that doesn't happen, they predict it to warm up the next day. Hasn't happened.  Another storm is on the way.  Catch some rays for us, John, and maybe dig some unfrozen dirt around a flower in your garden.

Our streets and main roads are bare but sidewalks and parking lots are treacherous.  The most dangerous ice is the invisible thin stuff on concrete.  It is safer to drive than to walk anywhere right now.

Thanks.  I was surprised at how good that video is re freezing rain. Dangerous but wow is it ever pretty.  A valley half a mile from here is a drive though a fairyland land of lacey ice (with enough limbs and trees down to look like it was hit by artillery.)  A big apple tree a block from here fell over, uprooted, across the sidewalk and outer lane of a four lane street.  It has been there all week.  Cars can get past and the city has much bigger problems.

Looks like you may have some freezing rain coming your way.  It is the only weather event that makes anyone in our family cancel a trip, other than snow too deep to drive.  My bold rambunctious son turned around and went home on Christmas Eve within a half mile of his house, skipping a family get together.  Crazy slick.  30 years ago about 1:00 AM in Portland, OR, I slid through a downtown intersection at about 10 mph.  No traffic.  At the next stop sign, I slowed to 7 mph by the speedometer and started braking half a block before the stop sign.  I slid through it in slow motion, slower than a stroll.  Makers of bearing strive to engineer such a frictionless surface!  New studded tires are the only marginal help, and I dislike them for other reasons.

The two places most prone to freezing rain that I know are the lower Columbia River and the lower Fraser River.   Both have a deep canyon cutting through coast mountains that channels cold winter inland air to meet moist Pacific coastal air.  Both have a freeway long the river and both are notorious for ice storms and freezing rain.  Driving up the Columbia River Gorge when in college, ice built on my moving windshield wipers till each was the size of a baseball bat.  I was stupid enough to stop, break off the ice and keep going.

I went for a 10 mile drive and saw 2 beauty coyotes, 6 moose, 5 WT's, 9 Muleys and tracks at the end of a dead end road that musta left a brown streak on the seat of the person driving.  He/she somehow missed the sign and the big corner post which I woulda said was near impossible.

Ill be blasting through that 14 inches of snow and 40 mph winds on my way to work in the big ford like it was a sunday stroll in the park!... Just about that time of the year to start thinking about wearing a coat 👍🇺🇸😉.  In conditions like this i usually get to work have a coffee settle In and start thinking about actually doing something and then the CEO sends an all company email and tells everyone to go home! 🤔🖕.. In hazardous conditions like that I swap out my .38 snubby for the big Glock 17, need more firepower out there in the blizzard.  :yoyo: :yoyo:

Nasty, that is a mean and nasty forecast up your way.  Stay safe.

Went across the line yesterday and was astounded at the ice in the little border town of Sumas, WA.  Ice 3 inches thick over everything!  Main street highway south was clear but side streets were deep potholed ice.  Fields and parking lots looked like frozen lakes.  I stopped to check our PO box but the  parking lot at the PO was too slick for me. I got out, hung on to the car for a moment and gave up.  Too slick and hard to risk these old bones just to check the mail.  I pulled by the outside letter drop, put in a letter and then the car would not move when I started to drive on.  I thought I was in park but no, the tires were spinning so smoothly that it felt like we were in park.

Added:  a crow tried to land on our garage roof yesterday but could not hang on to the ice.  Moderate slope.  He would land, slide down, flap, claw at the ice with his feet and run in place like a cartoon character but never could get a grip.  He tried three times then gave up and flew over to sit in a tree.

Yep, that was nice of you, John, not to mention drinking ice tea with temperatures in the 70's, real nice.  :wo: John is the kind of man who would give you the hair shirt right off of his back.

We finally have rain-- cold rain that chills the soul -- so cold that it is barely melting anything but it is above freezing and doesn't seem to be adding more ice.  Breakfast was hot coffee and a bowl of hot pinto beans simmered overnight in a crockpot with ham, while wearing a fleece vest inside the house.  This kind of rain means tracking snow not much elevation above us so I may drive out to see what the ice layer and new snow is like on some nearby mountains.

We can visit snow any day of the year within an hour's drive, and only wish we could always get to John's mid-70's sunshine as quickly.

damn, got me thinking, so before bed last night I put on the crock pot - three cup of homemade chicken broth, one large smoked ham hock and two large clove of garlic.  Woke up this morning to some terrific smells.  Put in some pinto beans, black eyed pea, a cut up jalapeno and a bunch of assorted herbs.  Some crusty bread and I am all set for a fine meal.

P.S.  The only reason I used a jalapeno was - we are out of habaneros.

32 last night & today. Of course that means rain. So no we have a thin layer of nearly solid ice with snow falling on it this morning. Plenty of traction when it's like that. But plenty of other negative potential if it gets cold quick.

A badger is the closest critter I know to a wolverine, though not nearly as big, and I've seen a badger rip through hounds.  Not very big but a buzzsaw build and attitude like Dick Butkus on steroids.  Somebody in Alaska has surely seen a sled dog and wolverine tangle.

It appears that some snow might be coming our way on Friday/Saturday.  Probably others as well.

Woke up to the sound of rain coming down :sick2:, which translates into, skating rink so big that guys on breakaways may die of starvation before getting home. :pout:

Rain?!  In your country in January?!  Very bad.

When I lived in cold country, once everything froze solid in the snow we didn't want it to ever warm up till spring.  Snow was OK but any thaw or rain this time of year was going to freeze solid again, usually harder to work with than snow.

We are back to our normal winter rain, though colder than usual at 42 F this morning.

We got about 6 inches of light fluffy snow, barely noticeable in the crucible of the frozen northeast👍🇺🇸

It flurried on and off all day here. Made it up to 18°F for the high but we're back down to 9°F right now. Supposed to get to the 50s this weekend with rain

You musta just got the one that passed through here the other day Nasty. It dumped 5 inches on us.
Subzero mornings around here lately (i love it)...and then teens during the day. Now next week looks like mid to upper 20's again.
Wow what a roller coaster.

I ent out just to see how bad it were and it wasn't as bad as expected, not good but liveable.  Coolest part is it sounds like all the vehicles are driving on bubble rap. :laught17:  Mail truck didn't make it today as he hit the ditch and then got hit by a tanker.    :doh2:

No better way to make ruts in a dirt road than during a winter thaw.

When the temps have been -30 most of the time the roads don't thaw.  They sure do cool the rain down in a hurry though. :laught17:  Talked to a fellow with a bed truck that had a banner couple days pulling other trucks up a hill west of here though. :yoyo:

I try to talk to you guys in language we both understand.  I dislike the metric system we have as not everything is one way. :argh:

-30 F

I remember when I was a little kid in school they said we were all going to be switching over to the metric system, hasn't happened yet!

Yep.  We had to use metrics in physics in 1965 and were told that in a few years everyone in the U.S. would use it.  Then we were told it would be nationwide in 1970, 1980, 1990, etc.

-30°F that's a little way too cold for me.

We were not nearly that cold here. So cutting firewood turns into a real chore during a thaw.  Frost line here is hardly ever more than 16 inches.

When we put in water lines they are 8 foot down as others have found 6 foot doesn't work every year. :doh2:  It has gotten up to 33F the last couple days which allowed the highways to dry off but man are the back roads slick. :puke:

8 foot! Good lord!

It gets too cold where you live. Makes me appreciate the fact we don't have to deal with the Temps you deal with.
