What was that bait you were using?

Lookin good!  I like the video of the fish looking at the bait.  Is it legal to use a spear gun?

I haven't ice fished much.  Caught some big rainbow trout through the ice some 30 years ago but only went a couple of times.  Crystal clear water and with a blanket over my head on a sunny day I could watch big trout swim near the bait.  With my old salt water diving spear gun I could have collected a lot more than bit the hook.  A man could attract fish and shoot them when they get within 6 feet or so of the hole, much more efficient than a hand thrown spear.

I'd use a wide multi prong flat pitchfork type spear head that would hit and hold anything from bluegills to a ten or 15 lb. fish.  For bigger fish than that I prefer a toggle point linked to the spear by cable.  That makes a small hole through and then slips off the point and turns sideways on the off side.

Legal in your area?

Honest officer I was just testing the depth of the water with that stick and that fish must've inadvertently ran into the tip of it 😇 :innocentwhistle:

NOTHING wrong with that bucket.  I'd be embarrassed to post mine from yesterday - one decent crappie and 3 small yellow perch.
That video is cool, though.  Cant' believe that fish didn't slurp it in.

Nope, not legal here Okanagan. It would be quite the trick anyway I cause you'd have to lure them directly under the hole. And then get everything out of the way so you could sling the fork in lol.

That was just a small horizontal 1/32 oz glow jig with a plastic tail on it. A triggerX spike worm to be exact.
I could hear some chatter through the shanty walls that they were catching nice Crappies on a Swedish Pimple. So I tied one of them one of my rods and got a real nice bluegill right away, but nothing else.

Jim,

Are the temps helping to thicken the ice?

Yah! Very much!
The first couple days last week we had to use one of the boat docks to get out on the ice. That sucks when your dragging a sled.
But yah the 12 below night temps definitely put an end to that. Were all dragging em down off the bank now. :laf:

With a spear gun I'd lay on the ice on an insulated pad and place the entire spear gun under water and shoot it there.   This would likely only work with ice less than 8 inches thick unless you had a really big hole or a cone shaped hole much wider at the bottom of the ice.   To stay warm it would take some kind of arm length insulated glove, like one of the long deer gutting gloves with a sleeve and glove under it.  Then you would aim at the fish in any direction.

While diving for lobster I used to keep a short spear gun, sort of a spear gun pistol, on the shorty surf board that I clipped to kelp while I dived nearby.  If I found a halibut I'd go up and get the gun.  I shot a few halibut with it, though it did not have the range nor power of my much longer halibut gun.  It would do for trout and pike, etc.

It was very much like this one.  https://www.amazon.com/JBL-D5-Speargun-Carbine-Spearguns/dp/B000U5P0DW

I tried to post a pic but can only get the link.

Moot anyway since it is illegal... but it sure is tempting!
