This is a pic of a beaver scent mound I took:

Scent Mounds (or Castor piles): How a beaver marks territory. The piles are started by placing mud and leaves in a clump in a prominent area near the pond, and then a yellowish substance is deposited on the top if it. This substance is called castoreum and is secreted from a scent gland near the tail. If you find a scent mound, smell it. This is a sure sign that there are beavers in the area.

Very interesting.  Thank you.  I've seen those before and knew that a beaver had worked on the pile but did not know what they were.  My nose does not work, hardly ever.  That's often a blessing.

I just got back from a little river bank tour. I've never realized what they were either, and your right they do taste like butterscoth when you lick them. That is so weird.

I was fishing a remote lake one year and had very little camp space, so I set up on the bank right next to a castor mound that was probably 2-3 wide at the bottom and about 20 inches tall. Well our sleeping bags were on the only real dry spots and as the evening went on and it got chilly, I started looking for a place to build a fire. I ended up kicking the top off the castor mound and building the fire on top of it. I think I fell asleep in my bag around 2:30 AM with the fire still going and I woke up around 5:30 or 6:00 AM to what I thought was my fire smoldering out. Well it was................with help. The fire must have died down enough that one angry beaver came in and re built the mound, right over the top of the what was left of my fire, and only feet away from where we slept.  I never heard or seen that sucker either.

sometimes I wonder....is that getting closer..... then it hits me

I had a personal conflict the other day, now I'm not speaking to myself.... I'm getting lonesome

I met the girl of my dreams, I was the man of her dreams too.....she used the term "nightmares" though.
