Title: AVATAR
Post by: Yotehntr on September 24, 2010, 01:05:32 PM
  Why the heck are all pics resized.... especially to 99x99... no pic is square so they're always deformed.... I could see a max size of 99 but when I resized some pics to max of 99 the other dimension is 66.... which gets changed to 99 distorting the heck out of it.

...Avatar is supposed to look like:

Bulking up, yep, that's the ticket!

Brad, having flunked GEEK 101 in school I haven't the slightest clue why the software does what it does. I'm sure Mr. Jim will reply as soon as he sees your post.

WeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeLL,
Pics (avatars) have to be resized for good reasons.
Very few people are smart enough to realize that the picture they just downloaded from their camera and are looking at on their computer, which appears to be approximately 4 inches by 6 inches, is actually 15 feet by 11 feet. :laf: Seriously!

They have no idea what megabytes are, so when their picture file size shows 7000 megabytes or equivalent to 1/3 of their entire hard drive. They thinks it's their camera's serial number...and justly so since they both contain the same amount of numerals.

So they try to upload this new picture that they have no idea would rival a garage door mural in size and wonder why it's taking so long. So they go turn on the lathe while they wait.

When the picture final gets uploaded and is displayed, all they see is the retina of an eyeball that once gave facial features to their favorite portrait. Because uncontrolled, the web will show the picture in it's entirety. Which also means that they would blow the sides out of our template here on the forums, or any site for that matter, and we would spend the majority of our time scrolling from side to side and up and down to read posts because the raw, uncontrolled images being posted and uploaded were not being controlled but were actually doing the controlling.

Did that make any sense? Tooo anyone?

Any avatar larger then 99 pixels wide actually puts a scroll bar at the bottom of your avatar. No one wants to scroll from side to side in order to look at an avatar.
Why does it do that? Because only so much room can be allocated for each area of a template, otherwise nothing works, and nothing fits.

Also the GD module (the little gerbil in the server doing all the picture resizing when he's awakened)  should only be resizing the width to 99 pixels. With constraints maintained that should bring the height with it, respectfully, but not precisely to it.
Something might have gotten changed along the way, because it hasnt always been an issue, and there's a lot of (unsquare) avatars on here. So I have made a few adjustments, and would like you to try to reupload your avatar and see if it corrects the problems.
One word of advice, it would be a good idea to rename the image if your going to upload the same one, because the server will see this, and disallow duplicate file names.

Let us know how it goes.

Thank you Jim!!!  I'm a bit ashamed but I did understand most of what you said.  :laf:  Mostly because I fool with taking pics of the calls pretty regular.     Sure appreciate it!  :yoyo:

I didn't have to re-upload... I just use a link to photbucket on my avatar, so it updated along with.

  So can this dilemme be avoided..... by setting the camera to take a pic this size...... 99x99..... or will a camera not go that small??

Good deal Brad.

HaMeR most digital cameras you CAN adjust the size of the output pictures, but you can't set it THAT small, no.
And it goes without saying, that if you set your camera to take the highest quality pics available, it's also going to be the largest files size.

Thank You. I just checked mine & it only goes down to 1.1 so that is probably still a big pic. On the other hand it will go up to 4.0 if that'll make it worse.  :innocentwhistle:

You can resize your photos on most photo editing software or on sites like Photobucket.

Yeah, I re-sized 'em to 99 x 66.... when the uploaded they were changed to 99 x 99 distorting the pic... it's all good now.
